What 125?


My lad has been talking of getting a 125cc bike when he is 17. He is a keen off road rider and I wondered if a Yamaha DT125RE would be the way to go so he could green lane with me. 

What do you recommend? Are the Yamaha's any good? Might even try one myself so we have matched bikes if it can handle 14 stone!biggrin

The newer "T2 DTr are very restricted these days may lack a bit of go for 14st ? and not easy to derestrict ? older ones are around and cheap, T2 i would recommend the 125 KDX same motor as KMX easy to unplug but with perimeter frame ? if no expence spared then the T4 new yam engine in the Fantic caberalaro with its 4valve water cooled motor and the 125lc enduro Huqsvarna same engine see Michael Pettie /fantic 125lc on you-tube ??????aww

Yeh a newer DTRE would be the way to go. The restriction is in the Front pipe of the exhaust and also theres a wire to earth underneath the speedo, But seeing as the only one you will find now would be 2nd hand im sure most of them would have this done already, More than capable for any lanes i would of thought!

The Yamaha XT125R is quite capable off road as others have vouched but a capable 17 year old might find it a bit too refined. 

It used to be possible to get ludicrous speeds out of DT125s but as soon as you start to tune it the insurance becomes a problem which will only surface when it is most needed - God forbid!

I have had surprisingly littler interest in the little beauty in my garage which is ready to ride - see:

you would be better with an older dtr in my opinion 1999 to 2003 i think are the the best as the electrics are thay are not the fastest 125 but have good low down power and cheap to repair etc. only thing i would recomend for use in wet lanes etc is maby re routing the carb overflows, but it shouldent be aproblem unless you go threw deep water.

Maybe an Aprilia RX 125.
With that awesome Rotax 123 Engine but it might be a bit more hefty than the DTR.

Been riding a KMX meself and I must say, it'll go and has gone the same places as a XR400s, KDX200 and the likes of and I'm 14st. Fantastic bike, dead easy and cheap to run/repair. Certainly not to be ruled out. I'm sure there's a few on here that'll agree?! ;o)
I've even got a load of spares I can part with!! :o)

DT125R up to 2000 cracking little trail bikes, I've owned several, including the older LC version and the DTR200.

Power is not really that important if you are a good rider biggrinbiggrin  some years ago there were classes for 50cc and 80cc enduro's !!!!

I had one of these when i was in germany with the army, if things got difficult i just picked it up and ran with it !!

The other option would be for him to take his test straight away at 17, there are training courses available over 3-5 days and that would get him a full licence limited to 33bhp, then there's a lot more bikes to choose from with a trail pedigree.

P.S ive seen a few ktm 125exc on the road with L plates on dont know how but there out there Restricted no idear but there are out there ????????? ive converted a couple of sxs gearing and a long silencer all that differs to EXC is rear wheel size/ lighting coil/side stand /speedo /reg ???

I hope she stays the course Harty! The owner must have lost a lot on that one.

Regarding handguards, I followed a lead on here to some on eBay which the ad said was available in white. I bought 'em and asked for white but they sent black ones saying they had run out of white. Yours for what I paid if you want? They are quite nice with sturdy ally inserts.

Yep - the wheels look supermoto stylee so knobbly tyres might be an issue.

Im sure they were only like 800 new when they first came out so seems a fair price, nice bikes, freind had one and it kept on going, only had a few electrical gremlins with it that was all
