i'v come across a cast iron fireplace that will go just right with my woodburner but..... the fireplace opening is a little narrow for my burner to fit.

it needs about half an inch coming off each side, thought about using a angle grinder but don't think i could cut it perfectly straight, would look terrible crooked!

i could get use of a plasma cutter but don't know what it would do to the metal?

any suggestions?

Those thin cutting discs for angle grinders would do it, easier to control than the thicker old school ones

Cutting cast with a plasma cutter should not cause any problems, as the process of cutting is different to oxy acetylene and does not have the high latent heat likely to cause heat cracking

However I would try cutting with a grinder, using the thin 1.0mm laser cut discs

Any problems give me a shout

had the chimney swept last year just before you started mark!

you think i would get a good enough straight cut with a grinder tim? don't want to make a mess of itsmile

Thin Disc on a 4 Inch grinder, use a guide bar to keep you in the right place, and take your time.

I use the thin disc to cut an accurate straight line, when welding stainless sheets in situ
