Ok so after constantly seeing riding clips of others its making me want one for myself the question is and i know i may regret asking is what one to go for as there seem to be loads to choose from i dont want to spend an arm and a leg and quite like the look of the ones that fit to the goggle strap that way i wont knock it off the top of the helmet low branches etc will be glad to hear your thoughts cheers

Go pro do a helmet cam and I think it's about £300 - £250 , but it does allow you to place where ever you wish on your helmet ! You can also buy attachments to fit to the bike like I have ! Hope this helps ! Mine is not the hd version but I will be up grading shortly as I use mine for surfing and but the 60 fps does make all the difference ! My u tube page is 25gump ! Happy shopping lol !

ContourHD can like the Gopro be fitted wherever you like, or mounted on a goggle strap, and gives 60fps HD for £200 from Amazon. For £100 more get a ContourGPS producing a tracklog alongside the HD video.
The basic kit gives a choice of goggle strap or fixed surface mount and many other types of mount can be cheaply obtained.
It is very light and slim but it's best point is it's fully programmable versatility, five settings ranging from full hd 1920x1080 to 848x480, either 30 or 60fps, adjustable mike gain, exposure, contrast, focus and sharpness. Two settings can be programmed in and changed at the flick of a switch.

There are numerous cheaper cameras for as little as £10 but hd costs reflect the quality.



Great fun for catching those moments folk might rather forget

I dont envy you this one.  I spent months weighing up the pro's and cons of HD helmet cams to film all my disasterous TRF meetings.  1080p HD is all very nice, but uses more memory than 720p which is more than adequate for what we do!

There are several decent options.  Have a look on youtube.com where you can find comparrissons between the market leaders and just see what performs best off road stability, sound, and price wise.  Dont want to bore on too much, so here's a quick breakdown of what I found...

Contourhd 1080p - believe it or not, cheaper than the 720p on Amazon.  A good solid bodied cam which has the advantage of a rotating lens which you line up with 2 lasers. One touch recording, smalll and lightweight with software to help make your movies.  Waterproof case and anti glare attachment are extra aswell as other attachments you may need.  These regularly come up on Amazon for £180!!

Camsports HDmax extreme -  nice.  overpriced, abut is more like a camcorder with a screen you can see your images in and play back your footage straight away.  waterproof too I think.  About £300.

Drift HD 170 - dont know much about this one, but regular deals on Amazon and a view screen again.  About £200

Gopro - obviously, if you want to spend around £300 to wear a toaster on your head.  Great footage, crap design!

I have a Tachyon XC HD.  The one I have was £156, 720p, fully waterproof, one touch recording, good battery life, supports 32g memory card, hardest cam on the market. Only thing is, with no view screen it takes a couple of dry runs to get it mounted properly.

I will upload some footage to youtube, but if you want to see me falling off just come to the next meeting!

All worth a look, hope this helps!!

Perfectly adequate picture quality cameras can be had for less than £20.  Mounting them securely can be a tricky.

What is really needed is a camera that hovers and follows the owner's bike at a distance of 15 feet.  Why spend lots of money to film other people when the rider of most interest to yourself is you?

You CAN get a bullet cam for less than £20, Ive got one I'll sell you myself if thats the extent of the budget, and you're right, it is 'adequate', its just not 'good'!  We do this for our enjoyment, so, dig deep and if you can spring around £150 - £200 its well worth it, enjoy!

The V.I.O. POV.HD is worth a mention. Basically you put it on continuous record and if something "interesting" happens in front of or behind you (depending on where the camera is set) you hit the tag button and it saves the last 10 minutes of footage. This is what the advertising blurb says:

New tagging and pre-record modes have been included. When you press the tag button on the remote controller, the unit goes back up to 10 mins and starts recording in the past. You'll never miss a moment again and you won't come back home with hours of boring, non-event video.

Also handy to have a wireless remote control on your bars and a screen to preview where the camera is pointed.

Just need to rob a bank now....

Think how many tyres you can buy for £500...

I for one don't really bother watching videos unless I know something happens.  Bit like TRAIL really...

I bought a Go Pro HD this year and I use it EVERYWHERE!

Snowboarding, on my MTB all the time, on my XR400, car track day, snorkelling etc etc etc

Took it on a beach holiday and it gives great unusual pics with the wide angle lens, and is great for snorkelling and surfing with.

Can't recommend it enough (I had looked at the Vio POV but made my decision based on the fact you can stick it on anything, it's waterproof, and quite small). You can also get a chest mount which gives a great perspective looking through the bars, as opposed to the side or top of a crash helmet). I know it's not the cheapest but it takes some great footage (see my Haccadown post, which hasn't been enhanced in post production) smile

Got mine in Snow and Rock Exeter, and they were prepared to haggle to internet prices too without any difficulty! biggrinbiggrin

I tried looking at your Haccadown film just now by the way.  you're still getting that EMI copywrite thing coming up, dont know what to suggest there.

I like the footage and the versatility of the Gopro, but the price and design were a deciding factor when I settled on the Tachyon xc hd.  I have some film of Hazelwood I will upload to youtube when I figure out windows movie maker.  Might have to speed it up though, its a bit embarracing!

Very Nice slow mo jump at the start!!!!! ;) nice vid, went abit funny about 8 mins in?? could hear bikes but just blank video.
