Just had this on my stihl.

clean out the tank and check the suction filter.check the oil outlet is clear.

fill tank with any thin oil and try it.

worked for me.

if not they are normally a diaphram pump and they split occasionaly.

Roger

My Stihl had this problem simply because the rubber feed tube from the pump had come away from the pump on the bottom of the saw, so the oil was simply pumping over the floor (this was before I got it I hasten to add).  Just had to clean it properly and refit it, and all OK now.

Do you have oil leaking anywhere, which may suggest the pump is actually working, just not feeding the oil where it should be?

Ive got a stihl 181 which ive had to replace the pump on 3 times. The design is just rubbish. Other 3 higher end saws i have never have a problem. After its fixed try using some 0w/20 etc in it as its kinder for the pump, Since switching ive not had a problem
