ktm 250 advice please

Hi all. Am thinking about buying a KTM 250 2t this weekend. It has no MOT or tax and needs a little TLC. Its on a X plate 2000. What sort of money do you guys think it would be worth and what things should i check before handing my money over? It did start first kick and ran ok on my short test ride yesterday. The worst bits are it needs new fork seals that he already has and the front pipe is rather rusty. Any thoughts or tips appreciated. Thanks in advance. Vinno

No MOT is that for a reason ? why wouldnt you get it motd if you were selling as its worth more with mot or wont it pass an mot just a thought as for what its worth offer £500 you never know it may be a bargain at that price depending on what its going to cost to put it road worthy

No it's just ran out and needs fork seals doing. Think it should pass once done but you never know. He just wants quick sale or will get it a MOT but will then want more money for it. I want to know how much it will be worth with MOT. And advice of checking it over. Thx

If you havnt had a 2t before then take someone who has... It will be noisy and clatter being a 2000 year bike... It's old for a 2t as well so ask for history of rebuilds... Look for white goo inside the oil filler cap and on the underside of the rad cap.. Lots of either with loud knocking from engine case then budget £200 - £400 for a rebuild.... The rest is usual condition checks..wheel, head, swing arm bearings... About £70 and 4 hrs work to replace them all Also check rear sub frame for cracks.... Seal leaks on front suspension.. Saggy rear suspension .... About £300 to rebuild both ends.... Go for a ride if you can..gear box selector probs are normal..as are kick start slipping..both about £40 in parts or £100 if done for you... Check wheels for corrosion and CRACKS... Some came with magnesium rims..they can be welded but wheels cost a lot to replace...£250 each ! Front exhaust expansion chamber for dents and blown out dents that have cracked..about £100 for new one.. All other parts are cheap to find but add up how any you can find that might need replacing...it all adds up... You can pick it up for £500 then spend another £1000 to make it road legal and trail worthy. They are ok bikes if looked after but also remember that you can pick up a 2005 250 exc for about £1,500.. I paid £1200 for my last one 3 years ago and it's done 2,000 hard miles since with only oil changes... The year 2000 exc is more off or on to ride than later 2004-2005 and newer bikes. Try and confirm its not a hashed up old SX... My old 1987 350mx I had for 15 years of enduros and trail riding with out an engine rebuild.. If they are looked after they go on and on... If not then they will pop both the engine and your wallet.. As always check reg document and bike frame and engine numbers match... Oh yeh.. Don't forget to poke a small hole in both ends of the egg and use a straw

Thanks for your time and advice Andy. All made good sense to me. It was confirmed new when registered in 2000 and engine and frame numbers match. The bike starts first kick. There is no gunk in radiator. The exhaust is rusty though. May get it sandblasted and VHT laquar over the top. Air filter is very dirty and it needs tune up. Rear wheel bearings are loose but he has new ones ready to fit. I think a bit of TLC and it will make nice bike. I have been looking and most 05 bikes seem to get sold for around £2000. What makes the later bikes ride smoother? Can I adapt the earlier bikes to have same power characteristics?

From 04 on the engine is different... But with a good tune up and poss a rolling road tune with a Jd jetting kit the 00 will be better... If you don't ride an 04 + bike you won't know.. But as soon as you do you will want one

Not maintened very well, air filter is a very basic thing to keep in good order, so i reckon the rest will have had as much attention !! nono
