I have a question


Pro riders use strokers cos there racing, they want instant power from a light bike. On the lanes we need a little more longevity, ever seen a mx rider ride 8 hours with few breaks? There is a cross over and lots of guys do equally well on both, so it's kinda down to personal preference. Find a few riders willing to swap bikes for a lap of cotton farm, don't ride fast by take time to work out the differences .

I ride a KTM 250 2t. I think it is a fantastic bike but i had a decent go on a friends KTM 250 4t today. I know it doesnt have the power of mine but my god it was so easy to ride! Not tiring and i didnt get any hand pain or arm pump like i do on mine, and it just seeme real easy to go fast and never felt out of control even when i wacked the throttle open mid corner to test it.

So my question is this,

How come in the extreme enduros the pros ride 2t's? i saw in the fast eddie enduro even dave knight was on a 2t! 

What makes them choose them over the easier to ride 4t's? 

(im asking this even though i prefere the 2 stroke, which i know sounds strange but i prefere how it feels the ride the 2t)

If your falling off all day a 2 stroke will be a LOT lighter after the third time of picking up wink

2 strokes are easier to fix plus cheaper on internal parts as there are fewer wink

As jaffa has already said a lot zippier than a 4 stroke which is ideal for events although i have seen many a top rider use both but then its a case for horses for courses smile

But for a few lanes i reckon you'd be hard pushed to find the ktm 250 4 stroke near the top choice smile 

when i'm in the senior section of the DTRF i might have to consider a lower c.c. + lighter machine biggrinbiggrin   ktm 250 will be high on the list smile

Cheaper on parts bar the bloody great front pipe that sticks out for all to dent!  Just put a couple of great wacks in mine an now doesnt sit on the cyclinder right no

My Honda crf250x was an awesome bike. So tractable when riding fast at events but boy it was boring. Whereas the 250exc still has loads in reserve and to play with! Love mine alot!

 apart from power valves that gum up and sieze, and also read valves which wear out lol

Loss of power and harder to start. Mine always starts 1st kick hot or cold and lately has been taking longer.. so stripped it down and found one of the four petals had snapped at the base.

ok ? my turn the 250 4T ktm puts down soft power low down as you would amagine is very handy in slippery conditions it also has a very healthy top end for a 250 4T revs to 13000-14000 rpm and is easy to manhandle due to the soft nature of the motor compared to some 2T engines
But hang on a minate you say you ride a ktm 2T 250 they do produce more ummph but the the ktm engine can be altered in the way it delivers its power ?have you left it standerd ? how has it been set up poss for a expert ? altering the tension on the power valve can turn your beasty into a pussy cat ? ktm supple three diff springs i beleave the red one is the stiffest giveing the bike more bottom end to play with ? before the power valve opens
how are you rideing the bike sorry if this sound condersending a T2 will lug in second gear and not stall or should i say a four stroke will stall if your not in the right gear ? and this is because for every two rotations of the crank a four stroke ignities its fuel in the combustion chamber once its a four stroke compared to two rotations and twice of the T2 engine plus there is less enersure, enersure adds weight to a bike ? when the engine is running it is less with a two stroke engine

So bottom line both engines do the same job in diff ways the T2 over a T4 is that you are able very cheaply to alter a T2 as your skill level increases the T4 tech can be more novis freindly to start out on and there shouldnt be any surprises ,The T2 surprise comes when your up a steep rocky/slippery lane your knackerd crossed up feet flailling sweeting like a pig and you open that throttle in desperation and the bike goes BAAAAAAAAAAAAR and carries you up and over when you thought all was lost cheers LOST

Yes my 250 2t has been set up by a much better rider than i.

Harder springs both ends, full fmf system, rejetted, v force 3 reed system, gpr steering stablizer, and the softest powervalve spring and the ignition on full power.

With the powervalve springs the green is the hardest (so makes it a bit smoother) Yellow is the standered one and a bit softer than the green and the red is the softest so opens the valve earlyer.

I have played around with these and i find the red the best for me. I didnt like the green. i had to ride it like the 250 4t and wring its neck in order to feel like i was moving quick enough.

I was really amazed how planted the 2504t was an how much easyer i found it to ride and how less tired i was.  But i didnt really like how much i had to pin it to get it to move quick.

 If you are getting hand pain and arm pump up then you need to adjust your riding/bar position. Also if your suspension is setup for expert racing standard (hard) then this will also give you arm pump up as you are having to grip to hard to stay in control.

Set the handlebars so that when you stand up on the footpegs the bars fit loosely in your hand, without having to hold on to balance. You should be stood at a relaxed standing position comfortably upright with your legs straight. Set the levers so that when you are standing up your fingers can rest on the lever. This will mean you have a bit of a stretch to reach the levers when seated on tarmac, but the controls will already be to hand when needed on the tricky stuff away from tarmac, when you will be standing up most of the time.

You should be able to steer by shifting weight from one footpeg to the other.

You should not have to hold on to the bars except as far as needed to operate the controls.

I had awful pain in my wrists and forearms when I first got my CCM until I fitted handlebar risers as I was having to hold onto the bars just to balance because they were too low to reach comfortably.

Good stuff Pete, my exc changed beyond belief with 30mm bar risers, if your stood up and leaning to far forward you loose so much control. why would you want to make life more difficult?
