Advice needed for the more vertically challenged!

Hi Mossy

As Harty said I'm short 5'4" but with short legs and a slightly longer body.  To get toes down on the DRZ I had to lower it 3 1/2 inches. That was a 2" lowering link and the rest was foam cut out of the seat. Did the same for the TTR but can get my feet down flat.

The cost of lowering links vary a lot, TTR was about £80-100 the DRZ was £20. I would considerer any bike that would take a lowering link, they are quick and easy to fit. Also there is a guy on the forum who will make you a  custom one if needed. But the cost of having the suspension shortened was prohibitive. A lot of the KTMs have the suspension bolted directly on the swinging arm so thats a problem. You can usually see from pictures which bike have suspension links. If they bolt to the top of the swinging arm then forget it unless you have deep pockets.

If you use a lowering link it has the effect of softening the suspension due to the change in the mechanics of the increased length of the link. And have been told to slide the forks up though the yokes to balance it, I did this to make it lower, whether it made any difference to the handling I have no idea.

Husky's are really high :( so discounted them. I bought the Gas Gas Pampera and it fits me without any modifications :)

Cheers Nick

It has 2x the power stroke of a 4 stroke mate so gives 2x (well not quite) the power - a 250 2T will be as powerful as a 400 4t

2 x the bang for yer bucks wink

Mossey I have a stock 250 exc you can try anytime.

Thanks JT, I did not explain it very well. It was how heavy the bike feels I was refering too and it was something to do with the spinning flywheel that makes a 4 stroke feel heaver than it is. Like one of those gyroscopes, but I could be talking a load of B*****s here I did not quite understand it as it was beening explained.

Hi guys. Trail bikes and short legs do not usually compliment each other.

Currently riding a DRZ400 with the Suzuki gel seat which is fab as its about 1.5" lower than standard. I can get tippy toes down on both feet with this setup.

My intention is to swop the bike fairly soon for a 2 stroke. I just want a lighter bike which I think is better for short people. Looking at an EXC 250, Gasgas 250 or 300, KDX220 or Husqvarna 250...probably in that order of preference. My worry is that i'm going to have to spend a lot of money getting them 'lowered'.

According to KTM powerparts their lower seat is 15mm lower than standard...that aint much!! I want to avoid the significant modification of suspension route using spacers/changed springs etc if at all possible purely due to cost.

Any experience from anyone on which of those bikes would be easier to setup for a short legged rider in terms of mods and cost? I noticed a few months ago on a ride out that Justin's (Gripper) KTM EXC 4t seemed a lot lower than others and we're about the same height. I think he maybe has got it professionally lowered. Justin if you're reading any help would be appreciated :)

Have word with Nick Schcofield(Shoe000) as he is very short in the leg department. He have a very lowered TTR250 and a lowered DRZ, of which he tiptoes both, but last week he bought a GG Pampera 250 2stroke and he reckons he can get his feet flat on the floor.

Hi Ryan,

I lowered my 450 EXC 4t myself, nothing complicated, I bought the lower seat which is approx 20mm lower than the standard seat, I've also lifted the handle bar using bar risers (approx £20) which bolt straight on and slid the forks through the triple tree and managed to lose 30mm there, stood next to James's 400 EXC my 450 EXC seems to be a lot lower.

at 5ft 6 inches tall I can just about reach the ground with the very tips of my toes, for me the bike feels very comfortable and when it comes to stopping I generally get just the one foot down any way (or stop near a curb biggrin).

Apparently Justin Gibbs will do a cracking job of setting your bike up to your height and weight professionally but I don't know how much it would cost or how long it would take.

Cheers, Justin.

Good to know Nick. I'm happy with the height of my DRZ at the moment, i'm a little taller at 5'6", but as per my original post i'm after a lighter bike but with a good poke from the engine. Figured that a 2t 250-300 would be what i'm after. not sure how much weight saving there would be on a 450 4t such as an EXC or WR?

It's not just the actual weight saving that makes the difference Mossy. On paper there isn't much difference between the DRZ E and the GasGas450 or Wr450 etc but trust me the gasgas felt like a bmx to ride in comparison to mine.
I didn't take the opportunity to compare the weight when picking up the bike so not sure if they will feel any lighter to lift, a 2 stroke 250 bike will feel lighter though, I'm sure of it.

I considered the WR250F and the CRF240X and the CRF450X. I was looking 2005 to 2007 and there was virtually no weight difference between the two Honda's and the Yamaha was heavier. So pound for pound in weight, the CRF450X won. But as Rich said different bike feel lighter or heaver than there actual weight.

I fancied a 2 stroke suppose to be the best weight to power, something to do with the engines centrifugal force, I sure someone with more knowledge will be along to explain.

Ha thanks all I appreciate the info. Thanks JT and ADS or the offers. I'd love to try the EXC JT but really don't think i'd even be able to get on it, and certainly wouldn't want to risk toppling over and damaging it.

Remember a 2t can deliver all the power in a big hit, but the 300's GG and KTM are also known for their bottom end grunt, a GG300 is high up my list.

I agree Kev that does look good, nice to see something different. You are right nothing else I have seen has been below about 36.5" seat height as standard.

Thanks Justin for the info, good to know if it came to it I could do that myself. To be honest that's pretty much what I have done with the DRZ.

There was a very low miles Scorpa T Ride for sale at Albion on Friday.

I appreciate all the input..but just to recap I will be after a 2 stroke bike. At this stage i'm just trying to narrow down the options. From what Justin has said I should hopefully get away with buying the lower seat and dropping the forks through the triple clamps as far as KTMs are concerned.

I like the look of the Gassers but haven't seen any yet which will be in budget. I'm looking from something from 2005-2009 and i'll prob have a max of £3k to spend once I have sold the dizzer....I would keep it and buy the 2t in addition but Mrs Mossy said no....My argument that I NEED 3 bikes was met with some resistance bleh
