Hi Sean,

I tried a sealer kit from Frost Renovations for the ZZR, and it worked for about a week so cant really recommend. It was extremely good at getting rid of rust and a sort of varnish that was inside there but not sealing uo a hole.

 

Welding / Brazing should not be taken lightly due to pockets of fuel in the seams. My understanding is that it is a about a 99% probability that it will explode.

2nd hand tanks are on ebay, with the one below being £42 delivered many more are on there but this was the first I saw

My first proper ride out was from Plymouth and Becky was riding a DT175 and in reality did everything all the newer bikes did, seems to me it is better to have an older / cheaper bike than none atall

Dear All

Hi ya, I've just acquired a 1980 Yamaha DT125MX with a 175 engine. It has a number of good things.... I think, the engine seems fine, frame has been refurbed and powder coated. rear shock seem fine. Carb is knacked so have ordered a new one. there are lots of non standard parts, including no clocks and front wheel is non standard, but seems OK and is alloy, though no speedo so needs an after market jobby. 

I am going to try and get it on the road cheaply and reliably. it weighs bugger all and should be good fun in the local lanes, but just need to sort a few things such as fitting the new carb, sorting cables, new fork seals and the speedo/wire spaghetti, I hope it is not a big job.

One annoyance is that the steel petrol tank has a tiny weep from a blob of rust which I guess is a MOT failure, so any advice as to how to get around this as cheap as poss would be appreciated. either alternative tanks, some kind of ethanol resistant sealant, welding? whatever. 

So.... the point of this rather wordy post is that if anyone has any bits and bobs from DT125/175 of that era and are looking to get rid of them, or offer advice - constructive preferably or at least amusing.... then I'd love to hear from you.

 or Plastic Padding Leak Fix which has worked well for me and others in the past!

Knock the rusty spot in a bit so that you have a good layer of Leak Fix. Rubs down like ordinary filler.

Hi - yeah, take thepoint re: exploding tanks going down the welding route. The tanks on ebay - like the one you kindly flagged up are liquid cooled tanks post I don't know 1981/2 may be. Mine is old skool air cooled stylee tank which are much rarer on ebay, with it seems often limited to USA @ £50 or so for somewhat battered examples + £40 or so postage - hence fishing for a plan B......

Hi - OK, that sounds like a plan - is it ethanol resistant?

I was worried about rubbing back to 'clean' metal and being left with a pile of iron oxide and no tank! smile will now give it a go.... I'll post up a few photos so you recognise me in order to stop and pour petrol into my tank when stranded in some Devon lane in a month or so's time!
