Cheap Campsites

Hi all,

Looking to get into trailer tenting (should that be a word or phrase) for cheap family hols in school holidays, the ones we are finding seem to be about £30 a night then extras on top (like kids and a car!) anyone got any sensible priced recommendations in Devon/Cornwall/Dorset.

Wife wants a site with water and a loo, so a little bit fancy, but not too bad.

Ta muchly

Join one of the big clubs such as the Caravan Club or Camping and Caravanning Club as they have their own sites both big and small.

I was a member of the Caravan Club for years which gave access to hundreds of 'Certificated Locations' all around the country. These were usually on farms, restricted to members and limited to IIRC five 'units' but the prices were very, very low as they served more as a pocket-money hobby for the farmer's wife than as a business. Admittedly, some were pretty basic (although water and loo is generally provided) but others had grander facilities - unfortunately they have to be paid for somehow.

We stopped our membership when the girls got too old to holiday with mum and dad and we disposed of the camper. However, the next generation is now with us so I'll rejoin as, to entertain the grandchildren, we've just got a trailer tent ourselves.

Keep looking for one as they are out there: Ours is a Conway too - a Cardale - that hasn't been used for over ten years but kept garaged with the canvas indoors so is immaculate. It came complete with expensive options like a bike rack, wheels for on-the-side storage and under-bed tent. And what did this gem cost us? Nothing - it was on Freecycle!

Cheers,

John

Has a great weekend at Alpine Grove the other day, £105 for 4 nights for a van over the bank holiday (family of 4), with heated outdoor pool. You can hire a firepit with logs in the evening for £16.

We've got a Raclet trailer tent and it is superb, its no quicker to put up than the Outwell we used to have but it is far quicker to leave the house.

Highbridge have a good selection, I have not used them but a fussy friend always does and I trust his opinion.

The outdoor shop in Truro sometimes has them too, cant think what they are called though

Thanks again everyone, and John your a lucky b#gger lol, I'd forgotten about the Highbridge place (just to live up that way) and certainly closer to here than Truro (might need to swing past Riches for a drop of the apple) I'll check out the Alpine Grove as well.

I bought my first caravan end of October last year & have been away in it 6 times so far, including all over Chritstmas & have not yet spent more than £21 per night.

If you get to the East Devon social on Tuesday or Bovey meeting the week after I have a few double up's of campsite books you can have.

It's well worth looking here here as well.

Good luck with your serch, there were a couple of trailer tents at the site I was on last weekend, looked well weird, i'de never seen one up before biggrin wink

Spent the last weekend at Golden Cap, nr Seatown. Excellent site, £55 for a long weekend in the summer holidays in the field, or £112 for a pitch with hook up. These prices were for a van and family of 4. Only 400yards from the beach, where there is a pub

Best bargain site I've been on in the last few years is just outside of Looe

Have a look at their tariff, it'd be cheaper to live there than in your own home!

Big toilet/shower block, It was nice, quiet & clean when I used it last.

I've stayed here a couple of times with the family, down by Lizard £13 a night peak season, plus the sprogs, depending on their age
