I do wonder

I'm viewing 30 threads on my page under "recent posts"

Of those 30 threads 13 are in "flog it' or "wanted" section

So is that what this forum is becoming??

the same thing was said 3 years ago

Is it an issue?? I've sold loads on here - plenty of non bike stuff, and when buyer comes out with had a chat about bikes and stuff, sometimes arranged a run between ourselves - so it all seems to link up well.

We dont appear to have any spammers - and I also disagree with those whose first post(s) are For Sale items - as I feel they've only joined the forum to sell.

You've also reminded me to check what's lying around that I have for sale now............LOL

Apparently it is common for people whose first post on other forums is a for sale one to be instantly banned. Probably a good thing as I would like to know the seller is a TRF member and not a trader.

The second hand bike market seems quite buoyant at the moment and this must be a good thing, although the regular sales from certain members certainly makes one wonder why they would buy something only to sell it so soon afterwards, again and again.

Sadly there are precious few runs being posted these days. Perhaps the number of people seeking to use the lanes for race practice is putting potential run leaders off, as some have suggested. Don't mind leading but anyone on a competiton bike with no sidestand who expects me to open all the gates is taking the piss.

Agreed Pete, with the Landyzone forum, if your first post there is asking questions (especially ones that have been asked a hundred times previous) and don't introduce yourself on the site within your first few posts will see you receive the wrath of some of the other forum users.  That said once you have been 'accepted' it is a wealth of knowledge with plenty of p*ss taking and entertainment.

Also they won't allow any adverts in the sales section unless you have made 50 constructive posts.

I feel this thread has wondered of topic..

It's not about new members selling stuff without contributing, it's about there being a high percentage of for sale adds from (I presume) long standing members at a time when there aren't many normal posts being made.

I have 2 comments on this (as was my view a few years ago)...

1. It's better for all of us (and the environment) to sell/buy used stuff locally and not be lining the pockets of evil bay/paypal.

2. Members should post more topics about bikes, riding & making things for their bike. biggrin

wink

Well thats ok then Rich - as I post al sorts of crap. As your an engineer, you probably like data, so here it is (over last 6 months).

Topics Started by "Wheely"

  1. General            x9
  2. Run Reports     x4
  3. For Sale            x4
  4. Bike PM             x2
  5. Lane Clearing   x1
  6. Ride Outs          x1
  7. Kit Recomends  x1

So hopefully I'm a fine and outstanding example of a DTRF forum member.

No fella's don't get me wrong it's more of an observation than a gripe - honest, hit the recent tab button then scroll down through and see what topic/s are being discussed or what areas of the forum are being used!

I believe if we're not careful DTRF could be lost, as in the sense what's been discussed, lanes, ride outs, members, etc.....

I hit the recent post tab a few times yesterday, have a look see yourselves and see if anything is about what matters to the group - maybe it's me but I know other people have said they've not got the same interest or even felt the forum was offering what it use to - just observe the forum for a while and see what you think?

Wheely don't worry someone will still buy your under wear on here - Brownie? LOL

I could add a story about my travels in the last 10 years on bike trips abroad but it may be a bit boring like watching wedding videos when you didnt go to the wedding. biggrin

I think paid up members only should be able to sell as other forums and clubs. The latest for sale advert is a free advert without any interaction with others or interest in the TRF.

Don't agree with going that far. How many paid-up members haved found a new bike or gear on here from a non-paid up member? - so a paid-up member could miss out under that ruling.

I do agree however that at least a few posts (an intro at bare minimum) should be posted before just selling on here.

As stated already, ones just come up hot off the press from "Lionheart". First post selling a Serow.

At least it's bike related - what's wrong with offering our users (and potential members) a good starter bike?

I know it's not considered polite to just join a forum and start selling but remember that not everyone is forum savy. LionHeart might become a regular user from now on, or maybe not, but if I were looking for a Serow I'd be glad that he'd bothered to join and post up that advert, it's one of the more relevant ones for sure.

And he's also responded to one of my own 'Flog It's. So that's fine by me.

I probably haven't helped the situation at this time by listing 3 separate entries for different items available. Maybe the guidance should be to list them all as one item.

However, I have bought/sold lots of items on here (mainly bike-related) and find it a very useful source of bits, advice, and encouragement to get out and ride.

The problem with restricting new members from listing for sale/wants is that this is probably precisely when they DO need to be asking for kit (maybe not selling it though unless it is appropriate as it appears to be in this case?).

Maybe an intro first should be mandatory? Certainly irrelevant posts should be curtailed from brand new members, or the forum will be flooded with junk offers. Then the discussion drifts into 'what is irrelevant?' - Road bikes? 4x4's? Cars? Fuels? Locations? Events which are not specifically 'dirt bike'? Isn't that what the 'Virtual Pub' was set up for?

Might be sensible to find out what the general feeling is, and if the majority have no issue with the status quo, then leave as is?

For my vote, I'm happy with the way the forum is run currently. Might change my mind at any time though!

Well my view is simply - a first post shouldn't be a For Sale post. We're not Devon-gumtree we're Devon TRF. So to introduce yourself as a fellow bike riding person shouldn't be a lot to ask.

That is no disrespect at all to Lionheart or any of his similar predecessors - as we have set zero guidelines.

Haven't seen a rule or guideline that exists broken saying they can't - but have seen many break a rule/guideline that does with no adverse comment.....confuse

"Do not solicit or advertise. You are permitted to advertise items for sale in the appropriate forum section unless they breach these guidelines.  Other advertisements require the express permission of the Administrator and Moderators"

Personally I don't have a problem with a first post advertising a bike/related item (for the reasons Rich says) but it it was to advertise a telly or a wardrobe then that's different.
