XR400 front wheel

Does anyone have a front wheel for an XR400 gathering dust?

Planning to graft some XR400 forks onto my DR350 and looks like its not a go unless i get pretty much the full front end hmm

There are plenty of better suspension set ups available, you need to do your research.

As you suggest it is far better with a complete front end, ideally change on headstock / yoke area, ie bearings etc.

Top to bottom fairly flexible, inner and outer bearings dims can often be covered by going up or down a size.

In the past Ive fitted MX to trail for like for like manufacturer, Honda, for example, same everything, just taper bearings for MX and ball bearings for trail.

ie RM250, enduro wireless speedo?

Good start point rolling frame, you can sort anything with a bit of effort / think.

I have looked into other swaps, seems like the RMX250 forks would be simplest as it would let me keep my front wheel, caliper etc. Also DRZ250 forks would bolt right in to my bike as it is, but they are rare to non existent in the UK and pricey to ship in from the states.

One thing in favour of the XR forks is the fact that i already have some, they are also 43mm conventionals like my DR has, so will slip into my DR clamps meaning i wont be screwing with my rake and trail. I don't really want some seal munching USD forks either.

Only problem is the front brake disc on the XR is smaller than my DR disbelief Im going to look into the possibility of making a caliper relocation bracket, but frankly am not confident in my fabrication skills and have no idea where to get it done for me or what it might cost.

Im not really after some mind bendingly fabulous fork, but the very basic coil and oil forks on the stock DR are a bit of a let down in a bike i am otherwise very happy with.

You shouldnt have a problem with the disc being smaller, my old XR400 would squeal the front tyre, if I felt the need.
It might be worth checking master cyl and caliper piston dims, just to make sure you dont fall foul of a gorilla grip to stop you.
Most of the Jap stuff is standard Nissin and fairly universal year on year.

As you say, the caliper is exactly the same, bolt holes line up on the XR forks too. I may need a different bracket but wont know until i have a wheel to try it with.

I might give this a go, it just means taking the bike off the road while i strip them which is a pain, especially if it doesn't work.

Thanks for the info Pug, i wondered if other wheels would do so it certainly increases my chances of finding one. The one in that ad has a crack though apparently, so i don't know where they get off asking £90 for it?

Still there's no rush, a cheap wheel will come along soon enough just thought i would ask on the off chance

Sorry did not see the the bit about the wee crack as said most of the honda off road wheels will fit from the 250 up bikes. im not up to speed on the smaller stuff ie 125 but theres lot's of xr 125 wheels on the bay as well. hears a 2nd xr 250 wheel but it' need's work as well just keep an eye on the bay one will pop up for £30 when you are not looking. you can tell the older wheels apart the disk's are 4 bolt. will ask around my MX mate's most have a shed full of old bit's.

Do you know if the 4 bolt discs have the same diameter and offset as the 6 bolt ones on the 400? its 256mm on an XR400 i think.

I will just play the waiting game, the buy it now prices of most breakers on ebay are nuts
