a little bit of trouble on 191-100

191-100

Hi for all of you who don't know this lane it is between 191-061 and 201-060, out near Sourton and Lydford in west devon.

Anyway I was riding it yesterday with a couple of others when I was stopped half way down it, by a lady in her car,( there are some house down this lane just before you get to the open moor) She asked me if we were going across the moor and I told her we were. The lady then told me that they were having problems with trail riders riding onto the moor and not sticking to the track (the ruts) It easy enough to ride these, even in the winter they are not that deep, or you can stick in the middle, which is higher.

I told her that we were members of the DTRF and we ride to a code of conduct and we were respectful of our rights, at this point she calmed down and we had a good chat. I informed her that I would put a post up on this forum for her, though I stressed it would not be any of our riders!

I am not suggesting for a moment that it is anyone from the DTRF or from this forum. I just said I would post it on her for her! As sometimes these messages can trickle down to all riders(non DTRF) of this lane.

These lanes a cracking and I know Brian done a lot of work to get this lane open for us, so we don't want to have a problem with it.

So if you do use it, could you please stay on the track and don't go of piste onto the moor.

No insinuation or offence is meant by this post!

Put this as a proposal for the next meeting otherwise nothing will get done.

The signs made up recently were for a particular lane with special instructions agreed by us and DCC. I suggest proposal to make it stick !!!

We could do with a couple of the signs used on another lane telling people to stick to the correct track I think on the gate onto the side of the moor. One each end

Hi all,

Which part of the "moor" were bikers accused of riding on ?. I have ridden this one many times over - as I understand it from fellow trf'ers the actual lane runs close to the fence(wall) which is  a few meters to the west of the track left by large farm vehicles which have created the the ruts that you mentioned. You can make out the light track marks if you google earth it- Can anyone clear this up?

I cant condone anyone riding the moor - I would be the first to challenge anyone doing so - just want to know the "correct route"

please advise.

Mike

Hi Mike

My computer trickery is limited, so hope someone can post the answer up! But if you are running mmap or any other gps mapping, with the overlays you should be able to keep to the route. I have always rode the ruts, as it is the obvious track and shows this route on my overlays, maybe I am wrongconfuseconfuse Hope this can be cleared up by someone in the know!

Steve

Hope this helps, you can clearly see on the Sat image the ruts, and you certainly see them when your on the moor itself. Lots of fun to ride biggrin (wet or dry)

The DCC RoW interactive map will always show the correct line in some detail for Byways - the pic below is of the section of this lane under question. The red line is the correct route.

There are two houses down that lane ,I know both owners very well and for the last couple of years they have dropped comments about motorbikes ,quads ,cars racing around on that part of the moor
They have also raised concerns about the fires being lit up there
They are from outside the area and was quiet shocked that motorized vehicles could ride across that part of the moor, when this subject has come up in conservation I remained tight lipped

That sounds like a route I was taken on about a year ago on a ride up from Tavistock and it seemed a bit weird at the time to be between a hedge and a barbed wire fence.

Since then I've been on the rutted track, but sounds like the other side of the hedge is correct. ...

I don't think the Lady had any issue with us riding on the ruts, I think she was more concerned about people riding off the ruts and on to the moor.

Although knowing the correct route would be good. Wednesday good for me Steve.

Ace

You are dead right Stevo smile

But I could do a bit of DTRF PR and then we could go and ride angel stepssmilesmilesmile

Meet Exbourne cross petrol station again? 6pm?

The lady I met Ray was really nice, once I told her who we was, and explained that we would not ride on the moor. More than happy to go back and do a bit of PR for the DTRF

Just came back from a quick look at this lane, it is not obvious or easy to see the correct route, though it is very easy to see the tracks that the farmer uses and follow these.

We also came across one of the neighbours and had a good chat with him, turns out he owns some of the land and one of the gates that we would like to put the sign's on. He would be more than happy to let us do this. Once I have sorted out with the DTRF and the local ROW officer the signage I will go back and see him and the farmer who owns the other gate.

All in all was a good result and a nice bit of PR for the DTRF to bootsmilesmilesmile

Thanks to Stevo and J Harvey for joining me.

Steve

That seems like a rewarding days work there today -
it is encouraging that what initially was a big issue, was turned into a positive PR opportunity

A great result & good job done

Nice one Steve and well done for sorting it all out as I know it wasn't straight forward dealing with all those different people and getting them all to agree to a finished version...proper job :)

Does look good and well done for sorting this, good effort. Have to admit to riding the farmers well worn tracks each time I've ridden the lane, the track would certainly seems the most appropriate route to a member of the public should they be around to observe.
