One for the clever buggers!

I want to run the road angel on a kdx as well as the ttr.

So, I am looking at some of the power packs now available.

Road angel says on the back that input is 5.4V 1000mA

I am looking on amazon at packs with 5v output and 10000mAH - 15000

Don't know what this means.

If they are suitable how do I work out the length of time RA will run

Your best bet is a Power Monkey from Maplins, mine used to last 6 hours using that

That seems an expensive way of going about it.
I think we run ours off the battery with a (www.ebay.com/itm/Waterproof-DC-DC-Converter-12V-Step-Down-to-5V-Power-Supply-Module-3A-15W-BLACK-/321629287937) sort of thing.

Unfortunately the kdx has no battery, unlike the ttr

Looking at the power monkey it is a 2200mAH battery. The ones on Amazon are 10000mAH. So does this simply mean they will last 4 - 5 times longer? They take 10 hours to fully charge so must hold some power.

Running off the bike's battery makes sense but when it's capacity is marginal and the RA battery is dead there's a risk that starting the bike will cause the RA to switch off thereby losing any track being recorded.

In that situation an independent supply is the answer but Power Monkey isn't the only one available and maybe this cheaper alternative would be worth a look: < link >

Cheers,

John

I've just ordered something similar off eBay. 12000mah. A tenner with p&p. Hoping it powers the RA for 6 - 8 hrs.

Hi Bozz - sorry about cutting you off earlier but we only just got the phones working properly again. No idea what buttons the little 'un pressed but interesting results!

My s/d Kerrie was here at the time and said that if you were buying off Amazon to check the reviews as the units vary wildly in what they will do. She bought a duffer first time around but then bought one that had good reviews (such as - it charged my iPhone umpteen times before needing recharging) and is now well pleased but her good unit cost about £30 I think she said.

That's not much good if he's no battery on the KDX, hence my suggestion

Sorry bozz a little of the issue you are having but thought I would add two two penny's worth about the RA

I Recently bought two batteries from e bay for the road angel and replaced the old ones but they weren't the same ampage and I'm afraid they only managed to last three hours. NOT SURE WHY SOMEONE CANT STILL MAKE THE ORIGINALScrycry THEN OUR PROBLEMS WOULD BE OVER. I love the RA but had charging/connection issues and any issue with powering it when it had a totally dead battery meant that it would often turn off and even if I got it working on the ride, my route and overlays would be lost, so I changed to my I phone still with MM but have developed issues now with the maps loading as it seems even thought the maps are on the phone it still needs the server to load the maps as you are on the move, so if I lose a 3G signal the map disappears and I'm left just following a line (and lots of places we go there's no 3Gcry

So think its going to be back to the RA as I now have a collection of EIGHT of them and try again and solder directly to the back of itsmile Like below

This is what Kerrie bought and is happy with.

Regarding powering the RA Russ, I ignored the connectors at the rear and used a proper TomTom charger with a mini USB connector attaching to the RA at the LH side - as recommended by Harty back along I recall. Worked fine and didn't seem to mind the regular soaking!

TTR

PS I think I almost got as many RAs as you so will probably flog a few off now that Christmas has emptied the TTR piggy bank cry

Russ, I power mine straight from the bike battery on the ttr. I have a 12v cigarette lighter connection and connect lead into this. The other end goes into the angel. I've never had any issues whatsoever. The unit has served me well.

I'm hoping I can just connect from the battery pack using the 5v 1A outlet with USB and connect the other end of the lead into the road angel to power it.

Why not find a home for a small alarm battery on the bike and connect it to that on a total loss basis. They a cheap and sealed?
