Newbie question about following green lines for lanes

Hi guys,

Just went out for a quick blat on my 1992 Kawasaki KLX250R, I'm exploring very near to me lanes around Exminster.

I've attached an image from Google Earth, which shows a TRF marked lane entitled 192-151. I rode out to it, thinking it did literally follow the green line, but heck knows it doesn't - I tried, but any signs of a track soon disappear.

Now on my return, I reckon the answer is that when it comes to the green lane you're trying to follow, the start and end points are correct, but in this instance (and others?) you have to follow the maps signs of a lane. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Microbike

Hi Microbike, Welcome!

The dtrf overlays are made up simply of waypoints showing the beginning and endpoint of the lane, they are just to help you find the entrances. The actual route of the lane on the ground is very unlikely to follow the line drawn between the two waypoints.

If you look an ordinance survey map of that area it will show the actual route, these can be viewed for free on bing maps. Most people in the group use a program like memory map, or viewranger to view the dtrf overlay on top of an ordinance survey map, so the route on the ground is clear at the time.

Hope that helps,

Albert

Here is that lane over the OS map, the lane is marked on the OS as a white road with pink dots in this case.

How they are marked varies depending on what the actual lane is but the OS usually has an indication of the route, and the dtrf overlay line will hit either end of it.

This is great, thanks, good clarification! I was using Viewranger for iOS, and recording a route, but couldn't for some reason see the route on the map at the time I got there, and then couldn't see a why to search for it whilst in recording a route / track mode.

Appreciated.
