Volkswagen T4 or 5

On the hunt for either, decent mileage, SWB and standard! Looking to spend up to £5000, would ideally like to spend less, but finding it difficult to find anything decent for less.

Thanks,

Crock

Hi Crocker,
Like wardys but mines a T5, mines got 260K miles, a mechanic friend of mine pointed me towards the 1.9 diesel as opposed to the 2.5, haven't any experience of the 2.5 but my 1.9 just keeps going,
it is a lwb, has 6 seats ( back set can be taken out ) and takes my bike with all seats in place so no mucking about with seats, they really are good vans.
There is a big van auction in Wales, Merthyr Auctions? might be worth a look. Also up north these vans are cheaper as down here all the surfer boys are after them, I got mine from near Stockport and saved a huge lump of cash.
Hope this helps
Pete

With T4's the 2.5TDI is the one to have, both the 1.9's & the 2.5's are reliable but the 2.5's have more than can go wrong... however the 1.9's are very slow. All T4 are pretty reliable though as their engine are lower technology.

With T5's the 1.9's are quick enough and reliable, the 2.5's in the T5 aren't the same as the 2.5 as in T4. I was told to avoid unless you can get one the newer ones, like 2008 onwards. There is a lot that can go wrong with a 2.5 T5,... and the higher the power the more that goes wrong. I personally would just get a 1.9 T5, and a GP if I could afford it. GP is the facelifted version, a T5.1 if you will.

Problem is £5000 isn't going to get you a good T5 so I'd aim at a T4.

1.9 is ok in. t5 as they had developed quite well by then, in the T4 they were painfully slow.

SSSSLLLLOOOOWWW biggrin

1.9D is as flat as a pancake.

1.9TD is marginally better but at least there is scope to improve it.

All 1.9's have a lower ratio gearbox (or is it higher?) meaning it will be screaming at 70 in 5th gear.

If nipping around town is all you're doing then 1.9TD should be fine.

If dual carriageways & M/ways feature in your journeys then get a 2.5, preferrable a 102hp but the 88hp still does the job if running well.

Also the west country has hills....., hills and 1.9's don't get on.

Thanks it is incredibly tidy, one former keeper and a file full of receipts and old mots. It was company owned so you may even be able to track down its original service history.
