Montessa 4ride

Honda Montessa are releasing a new lightweight trail bike based on the 4RT trials bike, its called a "4Ride" a 260 fuel injected fourstroke.

It will apparently cost a little more than the 4RT which is around £5.5k i think

At last! This should have been done years ago. I hope they have modified the suspension for trails rather than trials use or it will be a jazzed up version of the 4RT with the long range tank/seat that was on the market.

Taller gear ratios, and yes different forks and shock.....mapping changed to give approx 27KM/L (4.4 L tank) so poss 120km or so range and it only weighs 81 KG......

No magic button - but rather that than button with no kick personally wink

They did do it years ago in the 70s as the excellent Cota 348 was released in a trail-bike version called the 'Cota 348 Trail' - it even had pillion foot pegs!

Speaking from the experience of having a couple of 348s I suspect a modern 4t Honda/Montesa would be nicer to ride, more relaible and easier to start so I'd be happy to find space for one smile

Cheers,

John

so good fuel economy too, thats the most annoying thing with my Pampera tiny tank and the bike is thirsty so carrying extra doesn't get it far.

and did you see the under seat storage!! no more fender bag biggrin

In my last foray into the trials world ,that ended bruised and battered I slung a leg over the 4RT 300 that's one very powerful engine and overall finish is right up there with Hondas mainstream kit

p.s the Beta 4T 300 have elec start and a big tank seat combo conversion plus a softer state of tune

Sounds even better!

I had a Beta 250 4T which I competed on in trials and added a long range tank/seat for green lanes. It went anywhere but the suspension  and gearing were inadequate for trail riding. Kick start only no problem.

And it's a Honda smile

Quite so - when I changed my Kick only KTM EXC for the CRF with button it took me months to remember it had a button no Doug will testify to this, I was kicking it all the time with no issues....TBH still do a lot of the time biggrindisbeliefno and if the bike is 'in tune' one quick prod does it. Had I not had a button I would not have got stuck recently, had a mare of a recovery job and had to spend £150 and 6 hours in the garage doing the starter clutch (which jammed the engine solid).

If the quality is up to that of the 4RT then this is one bike that is going on my wish list - I liked the Idea of the Ossa Explorer and freeride etc - but having got the CRF have now seen the difference in build quality of the Honda's and as such am genuinely excited at the thought of this bike.

The kick doesnt worry me either, I would imagine this will have a pretty heavy flywheel so shoud be pretty hard to stall

One worry is noise, i thought the 4rt has a rep for being very loud, hopefully the 4ride has a decent silencer

I'd rather have a Scorpa T Ride with the WR250F motor if I was after that sort of bike . Shame they stopped making a 4t one .

4RT is really easy to kick, you can nearly do it by hand

In reality, you just push the kickstart through and away she goes

My friend has got a Scorpa T ride with WRF motor with an Athena 290 kit.
By modern day standards it is the definitive trail bike, absolutely brilliant.
A lot of us ride enduro bikes in one form or another but in my opinion they arent what laneing is about!
T ride or this Montesa thingie are far nearer the mark.
I rode a pro link XR200 during a trip in Ireland the other day, I really was amazed how proficient it was.
I had one in the 80s really had forgotten how truly suitable for real green laneing they are!
The later ones even had a button, mind you the later ones arent the same as the early ones.

Yep - kinda what I'm thinking, I don't race, I don't go that far, I ride alone (so want something light and that isn't going to try and kill me all the time), I have some nice 'trials' ground I can play on and miss having a trials bike in the garage and this for me would do it all....

The CRF has converted me to being a Honda fan and though I dearly love 2Ts I find the 4T is more forgiving - the 4 ride just seems prefect for my type of rides - and they have just reduced them by £700

Nice to hear someone else say it,  but in Mario's modern TRF you may not fit in.

What seems to be the issue with enduro bikes and laneing?

I've heard this comment many times but can't see the reason?

Yes I ride a KTM EXC 2t and yes I ride at events, SDTRF forest day, DTRF days, endurocks,  CORE etc... But I have no interest in racing.

I do however enjoy riding the lanes and meeting like minded poeple on a light weight easy to ride bike. If that's a road going enduro machine or well made trail bike what diferance dose it make?

 Yep, I agree

I have gone backwards from KTM's (cheating) to a DR350 and XR400 for lane riding

They don't like water too much, the airbox on the 4RT is very low

Like I said "IMHO".
We all love bikes, my new bike is probably the definitive "Not a green lane bike", very capable, just totally OTT.
But, a big but, it is perfect for the "Core, Sprint enduro etc", which it does even better.
My point with the XR200 thingie is that it is virtually impossible to upset anyone they are so quiet, they handle like a bag of **** and have independent steering.
So if you dont want to get hurt you have no choice but stay below 5mph or whatever.
The bonus to this is that you have to travel the same lanes at a quarter of the speed to stay safe.
The bonus to that is that you are on the same lane for 4xs the time and consequently you have 4xs the time to look over the hedges, take in the "ambience" and, probably, 4xs the time to watch your mates get into all the usual scrapes.
And how much maintenance does an XR200 require? As near zero as is possible to get.
In the 80s, when we started the TRF (not me personally you understand, but I was there in every sense!), "Rambling on a motorbike" was the order of the day.
However "Liability, pose, going faster than your mates, Im a big lad, compromise, cant afford to race, no wish to race, etc" have all contributed to where we are.
The lanes are the same (well similar), the fun is the same, the cost is prohibitive but no matter what we ride, for whatever reason - We all love the lanes, our bikes and the CRACK!
ps Anyone know of a dead or poorly XR200R prolink, sensible money?

Most of my lane riding is on my tod so its walking speed on wheels no High risk stuff and looking at the scenery bumble sort of thing on them trips out and the 4Rides the tool for the job. That said its ok on the tarmac and can handle 60 in short bursts but is happy at 40-45 so can play ok on group runs with your mates should you want to.
Fuel runs short fast crossing Dartmoor and with the lack of Garages about now so I carry two 750ml fuel bottles under the seat that fits in well with all my tools and spare front tube in there as well you have to love the tubeless rear run it at 10-12 psi it just sticks to everything.
Front wheels off the ground with a flick of the right hand 1st-2nd 3nd gear the Motor is sweet starts with a prod 1-2-3 time its so soft you could push it with your hand to start it best lose the Cat front pipe and put on a 4rt front pipe get a 2 map switch from the 4rt it will plug right into the loom then as well swap kill switch and side stand wires over so the thing will run with the stand down and you have a sorted Trials bike with a seat anything you want to ask ?????
