Trials tyre golf ball test


Just came across this..

It really demonstrates how a trials tyre such as the MT43 will hang on to the rocks and get you up the tricky climb.

an mt 43 is a fair bit stiffer than an X11 though

Yeh, I think the MT43 is a little tougher than that tyre, and running at 12 to 14 psi I guess that golf ball would probably end up stuck in the lens of that camcorder.

Still, I think it shows the principle of how they grip pretty well.

PS don't try this at home, especially not in front of your patio doors.

the X11 is an awesome tyre only snag is they only last one days riding on my yam and it feels like youve got a permanant puncture oh and there about 80 quid

I know Rob Drake runs X11's on all his various trail bikes and (I think) he will not ride on anything else.

Run them on the trials bike (at 4psi - I need all the help I can get!) and they are brilliant but as said before they are a bit chuffing pricey so I'll happily stick with an MT 43 for the lanes.

Seen the video before on trials central and it is pretty amazing how much they will deform - impressive stuff.

Compromise;
Michelin Competition Crossply Trials
(not the radial with the same compound the trials guys love)
£65 2,000 miles
Costs £15 to £20 more than the MT43 and wears out twice as fast,but how many miles a year does your trialbike do?For most a couple of thousand miles is more than a yearly amount.
Same kind of super sticky trials compound but with a fairly rigid crossply sidewall that doesn't deform so readily as to crab sideways on roundabouts and make you feel like you have a puncture like the radial does.Allows lines an MT43 won't entertain.Grips wet rock covered in leaves and runs well on tarmac with 10psi in.Lower it to 4-6psi for trials.Wouldn't survive at motorway speeds for long but I have never lost any of the blocks although cracks appear.Doesn't clog in mud as fast as the MT43 and clears itself quicker,never ceases to amaze me how much it can carry then throw up in the air in front of me when I hit tarmac.
