Renewing my driving licence

After a warning last year that we needed to check, I discovered my driving licence expires this August and I have decided to start the renewal process.

However, despite nearly everything else from the DVLA being online, I am darned if I can find where to renew my photo licence.

Anyone else done it recently and can advise please?

Just had to do mine, and I just googled it and it came up no problem. However, if your photocard is about to expire you have to do it the old fashioned way with paper and post.

I dont think you can,(not the photo jobby anyway) and take a photocopy, before you send it in case they lose any details. I think they have sorted it but some bikers had to take their test again after the computer lost their test details!

Thanks Dave - that's why my Googling failed me as it is the photocard that expires.

Can you download the appropriate forms from the interweb?

Just had to renew my licence Bike Car and HGV,  Remember its an offence to drive with a photo on the licence that is more than 10 years old.  And keep copies of everything there have been a lot of occasions where DVLA have lost HGV records, and the drivers have had to retake their test at the cost of about £2000, so they are not going to worry about the odd bike licence, no matter what they say

You cannot renew a photo licence on the net, paper form is the only way, and send form by recorded delivery, as DVLA also lose applications in house, so you need proof that the forms were sent

Thanks again guys!

It seems that DVLA send out the reminder and forms so I need to be patient - and keep copies of everything etc etc  confuse

DVLA response:

I can confirm that the expiry date in 4b is the expiry date of the photograph on your driving licence and this can not be renewed online.

An application form will be sent to the address we hold on record approximately 2 months before the expiry date.

However, you may update the photograph on your licence at any time using the following procedure.

Please fill in a D1 application form available from the Post Office® or from the DVLA ordering service at www.direct.gov.uk/motoring

The filled in form should be returned to the address below:

DVLA

Swansea

SA99 1DH

along with:

both parts of your driving licence (Photocard and Counterpart)

a new passport type photograph which is a true likeness and taken in the last month (you do not need the back of the photograph signed)

a photo renewal fee of £20.00 (no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or you are aged 70 or over or were over 60 when last photocard licence was issued)

No further identity documents are required unless there is a change to your name.

If you have changed your name, you will also need to provide identity documents as proof e.g. marriage certificate or passport* (a full list of acceptable identity documents can be found in the INF 1D which accompanies the D1)

If you hold a digital UK passport (the photograph and signature appear on the same page) that has already been updated with your new name, DVLA can confirm your identity with the Identity and Passport Service. You will need to provide the nine digit passport number and your signature in the 'confirming your identity' section of the D1 form.

Please allow up to 3 weeks for the receipt of your licence.

Regards

Copy everything before you send it.......

Dad lost his bike cat when he did his cry took 18 months an a solicitor to get it back. he still does not have all his cats back now.

Think about it - when you send it all in what proof do you have that you ever took a test?

If DVLA's records are wrong/mislaid (as his were) how can you ever prove you took a test?

Many such tales of this - be warned......

I scan mine before I sent them in.
I had to do it twice - Once for the photo update and again 2 months later for a change of address.
Luckily they didn't remove any of the categories.

As for proof you ever passed JT - I think I've actually still got the original pass certificates as given to you by the examiner. smile.gif

Go on line and locate a PostOffice with the photo machine... Just take the form + the required photo id and they take your photo at the counter and send the form off for you... I had my new photo licence back in three days!!! It costs a bit more but well worth it...

I think you have missed the point.no

DVLA require an up to date photo every 10 or 15 yrs, otherwise your driving license is invalid.
