MOT every two years?

When I was in Germany 20 years ago the MOT (TUV Test) was also every 2 years, but was far more stringent than the MOT. Personally I think it's a bad thing and that all vehicles over 10 years should have an annual MOT and perhaps extend the first MOT for newer vehicles beyond the current 3 years.

Yep, that's what they are also suggesting - 4 years for new cars, 2 years from then on.

As I said, I hope they do as my bike is maintained to well above MOT standards and my camper only does a couple of thousand miles between MOT's, and to be honest I don't take kindly to it having it's nuts rev'd off once a year just just to see if it smokes.

That's something else that should be removed - diesel high rev smoke test.

If you'd seen the state of some of the tyres on cars which we MOT after just 1 year, you wouldn't even start to consider 2 year intervals. We're talking wire hanging out of the sides and about to go pop. Sorry, sore subject. furious

Im with you Chris, 2 years between tests is lunacy, the way a lot of drivers "Maintain ?" their cars a 6 monthly test would be better

Supposedly the best " maintained ?" vehicles on the road are trucks and buses, the opertators have to show the Ministry of Transport that a proper planned maintenace scheme is used to ensure safety, with regular inspections and servicing. If they dont they can lose their operators licence. Even this system with annual MOT which would fail most cars if the same standards were applied, still falls down at times.

How many car owners would maintain their vehicles to a correct standard, without the fear of an annual test let alone a biannual one

Wouldn't a biannual test give knackered cars a better chance of self-destructing instead of being repaired every year to pass an annual test?

Changing the current system would be foolhardy and shortsighted.

In my MOT testing experience low miles between tests does not necessary = passing the MOT test, quite the opposite can occur due to corrosion and items seizing up due to lack of use.
