Import duty from USA

I am thinking of treating myself to some new Klim riding gear, having seen it at Trailworld last week, but there's a problem - the pricehmm

Just under £600 sterling from the sole UK importer but the same ($590) in dollars if I get it from any one of several US outlets.

With the current exchange rate favouring us Brits would it be worthwhile getting it from here or there, allowing for postage and import charges?

Had a quote from the US of $50 to ship both items but they have no idea of duty - couldn't seem to find a definite answer on the HMRC site but does anyone know the facts regarding both import duty rates and whether VAT is added to the total or before the duty charges? If I can find out exactly what I'll be charged as worst case scenario that will decide whether I go ahead and get the stuff from the US or not.

Cheers

best bet is find someone who has a relative in the states send it to them and get them to send it to you as a present guy at work did it the other day didnt pay a penny in import duty

If sent by USPS then customs will charge 17.5% VAT plus there is an £8 Parcel Force handling charge cry

......at least that's what happens to my parts orders from the States. It helps if the sender puts a low value on the parcel for customs.....

£22.40... and you have to pay that when you collect from parcelforce office
Got to be really worth the hassle for me to drive 36 odd miles to Robourgh office to collect [ 5 litres of tax... another £5 to HM Tax man!]

Gifts are exempt, as I believe are items that have already been exported from an EC country, last parts for my Norton dessert sled came in tax exempt.
all a bit of a minefield... probably better to give order to a local firm who would welcome your business?

When you get the customs demand letter it is possible to pay the amount due online and Parcel Force then deliver - you don't have to collect unless in a big hurry!

Try this site http://www.dutycalculator.com/

It appears clothing imported from the USA has an import duty rate of 27% and VAT rate of 17.5%

Holy cow.........disbeliefdisbeliefdisbelief

Duty and VAT is half as much as the clothing, making it more expensive than buying in the UKhmm

Don't know anyone living or going to the States and none of the stockists will lie about the description's value or send it as a gift.

Thanks for the link Jimwink

Phil - the stuff I'm after is here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/KLIM-11-TRAVERSE-GORE-TEX-ENDURO-MOTORCYCLE-PANTS-PANT-/200520890979?pt=US_CSA_MC_Outerwear&var=&hash=item746abe1e07

Also the jacket that goes with it - combined postage if I buy them together and this is way cheaper than buying here.
Price is same in dollars there as it is in pounds here and the favourable exchange rate means that it's more like £450 combined than £600 if I bought in the UK.

If it's a goer let me know via PM and we'll sort delivery addresses out. I don't mind paying for overweight luggage......or you could always wear them backwink

There's no armour in the gear as I wear a compression suit so I'm guessing they will be about 3 kilos each, although could be less if they are a lighter weight material.

I went back to Spain when I was living there with some clobber from the NEC bike show.......wore a Rossi paddock jacket and Oxtar TCS bike boots - they squeaked all the way through the airport as wellhmm
I've had riders wear their enduro kit on the plane when they came riding - helmet as hand luggage.....think you'd have to pack the trousers but could carry a jacket on (even if you don't wear it...)

Useful that.

Now I am seeing an awful lot of parcels that need import VAT duty to be paid before the customer gets their parcel - some expect it, some get quite arsey when asked for money firsthmm

Some will slip through the net if customs don't open or examine each parcel. I go to some regulars and about 50% of the time the parcels get pulled for duty. Bit like Russian Roulette......

I never understand how most of the stuff coming over from China and Hong Kong costs the sender nearly zero to post and, apart from 10kg of wavy disc, all escape the dreaded duty! Not had one opened and checked - yet....

Some American companies will understate value on parcels to help me but the important ones that I spend a lot with stick 100% by the rules.

Also, anyone noticed that the individual parcel charge from Parcel Farce (where the US sender has used USPS) has gone up from £8.50 to £13.50 - that's a big hike and a lot for a low value parcel - and on top of duty and VAT   confuse

Just had a delivery of parts despatched from the States on 13 September via USPS and Parcel Farce - 15 days for parts I was desperate for? evileye confusebleh

On the other side of the coin, I sent a parcel to the States via DHL. It was collected at 12.28pm on 26 September and delivered at 10.23am on 28 September (today) - brilliant biggrin

But what is it about the UK that makes everything so sodding difficult? no

Hard to believe but after all my moaning, a part sent by USPS from the USA on 2 Jan (no Customs due) was delivered this morning - 4 days blankstare

Faster than our UK couriers who seem to be on a go slow at the moment no

Parcels sent by My Hermes on 31 December (morning of!) are still "out for delivery" evileye

RE: Buying stuff from USA (or anywhere else!) - duty and VAT calculator

Your lucky Brian, my small USPS parcel was shipped from the US on 24th Nov. It was tracked as sitting in UK customs on the 28th Nov. It has been there ever since. I wonder when they will get their finger out !
