I went out for a few hours with some DTRF friends last Sunday, the lanes were based around Bere Alston area and fairly wet due to the rainfall over night, about half way through the ride we were joined by a second group of which I knew at least one of the members (I'm not going to mention names ), they fancied tagging along for a while which was great, however, I couldnt help but notice that a couple of riders were running on supermoto tyres .
Anyway to cut a long story short, the last hand full of lanes were ridden by all riders with ease, the last lane of the day was "Grenofen", this had to separate the men from the boy's especially as it was damp, out of the first three bikes to clean this lane going up, one bike had a full set of road legal nobblies, one bike had a full set of road legal supermotos and my bike had the trusty MT43 rear and MT21 front.
I take my hat off to the supermoto lads, some cracking ridding there .
All depends on the terrain. Sometimes it's just rubber contact area that counts, in which case sumo tyres will be well suited. I find on rocky or stoney ground anything more aggressive than a trials style tread pattern gives less traction so will have you wheel spinning and the back end kicking out.
I also find that a good front tyre makes a massive difference in your confidence in your bike.
i was on that ride following the supermoto guys, and i have to say it was 95% rider ability getting up those lanes. the bikes were spinning and sideways all the way up each lane. the guys on the bikes were very good riders and did a great job. it was fun to watch.
I was on that ride as well, I could not belive how these boys manage to get up the lanes with super moto tyres but great job they done (i think your mad Robin but great fun)
