Power Monkey (or similar) Info

You can probably connect across the capacitor on yours and get a good 12VDC feed for your RA.
200W stator in there, plenty of power.

If you are really worried about your RA charger you can first feed through one of these - QL32K TS7812CZ

although these are the best for auto application due to very low voltage drop.

More info here for a pre-built circuit bord.

Hoops another cheaper option is an alarm battery from maplins, which you could mount behind the headlight shroud, its what I'm planning to do on the IT when I finally get the jetting sorted!

This - you have to scroll on the right to find a 12v one but my fishfinder works all day on one like this  http://www.maplin.co.uk/sealed-lead-acid-batteries-19363

Or this http://www.maplin.co.uk/5000mah-portable-power-bank-for-mobile-devices-612208

I'm sure I read on here ages ago that someone used/uses a Power Monkey with their RA once the internal battery has run out.  Did I remember right?  If so, what did you use and how did you find it?  Was the internal RA battery and the Power Monkey good for a full day's ride?  How did you cope with waterproofing?

I'll be using the "packed lunch box" method to mount my RA, I'm asking about the Power monkey as it's been hit and miss for me powering off the bike in the past.

Cheers smile

Hi Martin

I have used a power monkey (still have it). I power my RA from a fused line straight from the battery. I rarely have any issues. I use a fag lighter socket bolted to the back of the headlamp cowl. I have wired it via an Optimate cable so I can disconnect and charge the bike battery if necessary. It makes maintenance easier as well when I have to remove the headlamp and associated wiring. I have attached the RA mounting to the handle bar brace using thick cable ties.

I am very happy with it. This set up has survived over two years of laning on the DRZ.

Cheers for that Craig.  No battery on mine!

Cheers Rich, not looking to mess with all that sort of stuff really (plus I don't even know what that thing is!).  Followed loads of advice two years ago or so about powering off the bike, ended up buying lots of bits and not getting anywhere, otherwise than chucking money away and loads of blown fuses so just want something "plug and play" wink

How much life is there in you RA internal battery?

Mine is really on it's last legs, so I use a Power Monkey ( an older version of this http://www.portablepowersupplies.co.uk/portapow-usb-battery-pack/ ), sat in behind the RA in the same lunchbox, itself on a Ram-mount fitting on my bars.

Depending on the display brightness setting on the RA, I get 6-7 hours RA life, but carry a second Monkey just to make sure. I'm usually on my way home when I do the final change, but it's just to make sure my track is complete, to keep John Leah happy!

When I finally modernise to a bike with a battery, or I figure out how to power from the generator or I finally cough up for a replacement RA battery, I have to put up with this method.

We use these for work and they are a quality bit of kit, you can get them for about £25 on Amazon....

Went out for almost for hours at the w/e on a full charge, RA lasted throughout with scren brightness of 60%.

Thanks to all for the replies
