Proposed closure of Exeter DVLA office (and others)

Whilst it is possible to do quite a lot of stuff on line or in Post Offices, there are times that you actually need to speak to "the experts".

The DVLA staff at Marsh Barton have dealt with all of my queries on the spot and have potentially saved weeks of postal back and forths. I usually had filled in the wrong forms disbelief

Please go to http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/consultations.aspx and complete the consultation form objecting to the closure if you agree my sentiments.

So they are going to close the Exeter DVLA office.....

I objected to the closure and have just had this email in response:

Thank you for responding to the Transforming DVLA Services public consultation which ran from 13 December 2011 until 20 March 2012.  The results have all been analysed and considered and we can now advise that Ministers have agreed that the DVLA should proceed with the proposals in the public consultation.

The proposals centred on the increased use of digital services and the use of intermediaries.  Implementing the proposals will result in the centralisation of the 10 enforcement centres by the end of March 2013 and the closure of all 39 local offices by the end of December 2013.

The key aims of the proposals are to:

o   enhance customer services by better aligning customers with existing or new service delivery channels;

o   increase the use of existing and planned electronic services;

o   substantially reduce the operational cost of the services; and

o   give commercial customers greater responsibility and ownership over the way they transact with us.

These changes will deliver efficiencies and annual savings of around £26 million per annum are expected.

We will continue to work with stakeholders to support their transition onto new channels.

The initial consultation period with the Trade Union Side (TUS) ran concurrently with the public consultation exercise and beyond.  The Agency is committed to continuing to talk to the TUS about the impact of the closures.  A formal 90 day period of consultation will be required if compulsory redundancies are likely, although the aim is to avoid compulsory redundancies wherever possible.

We received 1015 responses to the consultation.  You can see the summary of responses, Case for Change document and impact assessments at www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/transformation.

Regards,

You want to try working in Bombay, "I fully understand but I am not knowing these things", followed by much head shaking and smiling as they try to sell you a three legged deaf elephant, that belongs to a friend of their wifes cousin three times removed, who is also deaf and has three legs

However as someone once said if you ask a welshman directions it takes 3 weeks to wash the spittle out you hair, with all the LL and DD's that require an enormous amount out throat clearing to pronounce

I have had to use the Exeter DVLA office quite a few times in recent months and it is good to have a face-to-face with someone who can tell you exactly what you need to do and usually give instant answers.

Doing stuff by snail mail is going to cause many people, albeit mainly dealers, a host of problems.

Can't believe only just over 1,000 members of the public responded to the consultation confuse

I've only used them twice, as I don't wheel and deal much, but I went there recently to put a cherished number on my van as I wanted it sorted without posting things off and waiting what may be a couple of weeks.

Parking was easy outside. I went in and immediately I'd taken my delicatessen style ticket, my number was called out. The smiling lady behind the counter checked my paperwork, asked me to wait whilst she printed off some forms and a tax disc, and within 3 minutes I was out of the office, my transaction complete.

For those that do this sort of thing regularly, the loss of this type of service to be replaced by a post and wait system I can see it being a right pain in the....

I know during their consultation process, VRO staff who still needed a local office were told they could possible look at sharing with VOSA in Grace Road. Clearly their DfT bosses didn't realise that VOSA (also DfT) too, are looking at closing offices and test centres.
