Good call, but I do too many miles to have a van, and I have only just managed to get away from estate cars! (plus we have some Vito's I can borrow from work for bike transport)
I've been "thinking" about replacing my a4 - although I still love it to bits - and after a lot of thinking/reading I believe the newer BMW320D is a decent and efficient diesel engine. So my money would go there (and with my 35mile each way/day commute) I need something comfy, nippy and fuel efficient which can still handle well, looks good and brings a smile to my face. I'd get the tourer as shove the mx kit in the back when troys riding.
Dunno if BMW have fixed it with the 320d but that had a major issue with exploding engine syndrome, problem with the intake swirl flap trashing the engine.
My ex wife bought one against my advise, told her to buy a VW or Skoda diesel but she a snob and badge orientated, 53k 2 years old and engine went bang 6 months after buying it. Didn't heed my advise but I'm a mechanic so wtf do I know?
Volvo should run for ever but later models are not like the old skool tanks and a little more flimsy than the old ones. Parts are horribly expensive at times but if you never need them then so waht? You will need a flat cap or deerstalker and may have to take up pipe smoking. Btw I have a really nice caravan for sale, no seriously I do!!

Would add had and still have a Skoda Fabia 1.4 petrol from new on a 04 plate and now has about 85k on it. Apart from a HT coil which misfired once and put the management light on and central door lock actuator that was sticky it had nothing under warranty. Both things were nitpicking tbh.
In that time its had wishbone bushes twice, last ones I stuck in were the solid A2 ones so thats fixed, brake discs front and rear, pads etc. Only thing wrong with it currently is the door sensor switch is buggered and doesn't turn the light on (common fault) and doesn't allow you to open the tailgate until you open another door, and thats it!! Still on same battery, exhaust, cambelt.
The Mondeo is a good car and the diesel high powered ones do shift somewhat. Reliable as well and will happily rack up the miles without complaint
Nothing is totally perfect though.
Don't see as many Mondeo's around like you used to either, probably because of the competition around that price range is fierce. They look quite tasty an all, not like the old shape bathtub with exploding bumpers if you dared to knock em.
Would add you will like the beemer, but they are hassle, unreliable and overated and desperately overpriced.

Taking my colleagues 120D M sport out to play tomorrow night after the boat show to see if I like it.
Not a Beemer expert but have driven a 120 - you will love it, great to drive. Lot of wonga for a small car though and there ain't much room. OK for you and Mrs PDO but IMHO it ain't a family car - if thats what you need.

Chap in work a few weeks back hired a (vectra I think) car which had leccy hand brake was driving down the A30 through Cornwall at 60-70 when the car suddenly skidded sideways as the back end locked up.
His missus was trying to lower the passenger window and flicked the leccy brake on by mistake.....
I note the new volvo has a pedestrian air bag now the old duffers who drive them will think it will be fine to hit someone as they will be OK....
I think air bags part of the reason folk drive like compete diviots - 'I can crash as I'm gonna be fine and will be surrunded with big fluffy air bags' If they replaced the air bag in the steering wheel with a 2 ft long spike that deployed in the event of a crash and went through the drivers head then we would have a lot of very careful drivers on the roads
I agree, JT. It started with seat belts. There's no need for the spike to deploy. It needs to be there fixed & highly visible. I think I saw you guys out yesterday at the crossroads on 7 mile straight. I would have joined you but am off to France on my own Wednesday so thought I'd better spend some time with the better half.

Did this when i had the discovery. my mate pulled it up when we were going along (for a laugh?) but nothing happened just a warning buzzer... Forgot about it until be dipped under 20mph and then crunch! stops dead! bleedy hell it was a shock for both of us more for him as he had taken off his seatbelt already
Have to say I'd follow previous advice and get a Skoda Octavia Vrs - available as a petrol or diesel, the old Bill use 'em and they're way cheaper than equivalent German stuff.

I've been following the thread I should imagine any of the above would suit you , we use skodas for RRVs at work I was shocked at the price of spares the resident mech asked on his update course how much is a diesel injector replacement , skoda told him you won't need one when pressed skoda said quot £1800 each ,in a lul at work again police say they love there five cylinder diesel BMW 320 very quick car but there now being replaced by skoda and Volvo ill have to have another chat with the patrol guys soon ?
