Should I be sad or celebrate?

Bit off piste but I've always had a hang-up about having a car with >100,000 miles on the clock. Yes I know modern engines and materials mean 200,000+ should be easily achieveable, especially on an oil burner (diesel).

So I've always got rid of my cars well before this mileage -- the most I ever took one too (Primera GT) was 97,000.

Well have had my Audi A4 for 3 years now and the mileage has been creeping up (especially with my 36 mile each way commute every day). I have to say that despite the car (with full Audi service history,  no known faults, drives well and feels solid) running exceptionally well, I've been actively looking for a replacement since the car reached 95,000. But without spending an absolute fortune, I cant find anything that will match mine on looks and it's high spec of extras (some not essential - but you get used to them - and then dont want to be without them).

So the mileage has continued to increase (despite me now driving the GFs car to Plymouth twice a week to slow down the mileage) and today it happened. My lovely Audi reached 100,000 and I still own her. Glad in a way, as I've now crossed that marker, put my demons to rest, and now can drive without hang-up or concern.

200,000 here I come.................

MPG does tend to read high by around 8-10mpg. This was a commute home from work Plymouth to Goodrington and a pretty steady speed this eve (70 on A38 and only around 40mph on the single carriageway from Marley Head due to following fogies).

Dont know what the problem is about 100K,   Most places I work in Europe they wish british cars were LHD as to them a high mileage car has 250K plus on the clock, same makes and models as in the UK, and they would love to import them with 100K  its just run in.

Mileage means nothing, usege and maintenance are the main points. Mileage is something the car manufacturers and second hand industry use and have indoctrinated the uk into "High Mileage" means sell your car and buy a newer one

Just out of interest the place im working in Holland has a works runaround  1999  ford fieasta diesel  300K  and still going strong on the original engine

confuseSounds good you pay a preium for a tdi, almost run it in, take a massive hit on value and some Eastern European snaps it up to do 1000 mile comute in it.

Loads of 1.9 PD's about over 300K even yours with its short comute should manage in excess 250K

Man up smile

I've just bought a 134K 2.5TD rust free pickup that still pulls like a train.  Not quite the right phrase but turnover is vanity and profit is sanity.  Do you need to afford to replace it and if it 'aint broke don't fix it.  Keep your well run in car and buy a new bike?

It's funny isn't it - I'm at about 98k on my T4 and I'm also getting twitchy... maybe I should sell now before she goes over 100kaww

I had a high rev'ing Honda CRX V-Tec from new (back in '92) and I sold her once she got to about 68k as I was worried what the percieved value might be as she neared 100k.

My dad told me that when he first started driving an engine was tyically only good for about 20k, then it was recon time.ashamed

Now an average family sallon (in the hands of a cabby) will rack up 250k easily within a few years.

In days gone by it was thought good if you got 80k out of a car and 100k was considered an massive acheivement. Modern engineering and lubes have changed all that.

Dont panic Captain Mainwaring- 1ook is when I bought mine.

Im running a BMW320d on 04 plate. just covered 244k and never let me down (and its an automatic). Just change the oil regularly and they last ages.

(Thats probably mine stuffed now I have said that)

Cheers

2 Blokes came to pick a mower up from me last week all the way from lithuania. They had a lwb sprinter 08 year with 460,000 kms on it. Chatting to the blokes he said it had never even needed a clutch and they come to the UK twice a week with a triple axle flatbed !
