Supporting a dicky knee.

Mornin' chaps.

I'm still getting a fair bit of grief from my left knee after stuffing myself into the scenerey a few weeks ago and turning my foot back to front.n

Had assumed it was a sprain, but I'm generally OK for walking short distances, the woosy pain bit comes when I touch the inside of the knee joint or it touches anything (e.g. mattress).

I've laid off riding since but I'm determined to go to Smeatharpe, so looking for advice as to how to support it and generally favour it.

Strap it? Wrap it? Some kind of sports support? Ask the pharmacist? I'll even wear purple silk lounging pyjamas if necessary if it'll help!b Riding technique? Hah, I need that in spadesd

Anyone else dealing with this who can suggest. I think Wheely preempts with Ibuprofen gel.

Not too bothered about the pain side of things, more worried about it giving way and bu..ering up my day out.

Get a knee brace, this is what I used when I fooked my knee up to ride round an event, and it worked well

If its still as bad as you say after several weeks you really do need to get it looked at, Strapping it up or wearing knee braces may let you use it now but you could be storing up a lot of problemsfor yourself  later on,  Your knee giving up and messing up your day at Smetharpe may be the ony the start of your problems. So get it looked at soon

Never ride without knee braces, had then for years, the risk of ACL and hyper extensions too great for me, plus great if you do have an injury, mine are CTI's, cost a small fortune but my knees are as well protected as my head s

Ooo 'eck! What happened was that my toe caught on something and the foot rotated to the left about the axis of the lower leg. My boot protected the foot and ankle so the strain went onto the knee.

I don't actually see how a knee brace would have stopped that as the lower leg could have still rotated. The brace is only held with velcro strap and can't be tight enough to stop it.

I do see the merit of wearing braces to prevent certain unnatural articulations (and indeed they are now on the shopping list), but not sure how they would have helped in this instance.

Would a brace be best for Smeatharpe of one of SteveH's Nora Batty's? Don't anticipate being able to wear something hard pressing on it.

I already see more of my Doc than I like, so reluctant now in case he pulls the plug on my Smeatharpe aspirations.

Worst comes to the worst I'll bimble around sitting down and eat lots of hotdogs!w

Well thanks to all who have replied with advice and suggestions.

Some braces seem more orientated to competition and pro use which would make me feel a bit of (a lot of) a fraud!

The Alpinestars jobbies look like they'd be up to a bit of laning, though whether they'd be tugboat-proof remains to be seen.

Think I'll give them a whirl unless my research finds anything else, thank you for sending me off in the right direction.

What is really needed is the ability to not fall off!

When that happened to me I purchased a neoprene support with built in hinges. Not as bulky as a full on brace, but it did away with the feeling that my knee was going to let go suddenly. Cost about £17 from a sports shop and fits quite comfortably under waterproofs.

 Forgive me for being a doom merchant, but I showed this post to my missus (who works in X-Ray at Torbay Hospital) who said "why the feck hasn't he had it scanned??"

You won't make it better by wishing it away - although the power of the mind is not to be underestimated it ain't gonna cure ligament or tendon damage, nor will it mend bones.

1) Get it checked at a hospital asap

2) If it doesn't need surgery, go to a sports physio as they are more likely to have experience of these injuries

3) Feel free to ignore any, or all, of my comments, as I'm not a real doctorc

Get it looked at. I didn't and created more problems with my shoulder as a result of not having done the right thing in the first instance which was to get it checked.
