12mm or 14mm nuts with M8x1.25 thread


My Googling has failed me in my search disbelief

I know that M8x1.25 threads normally take a 13mm nut but I need 14mm preferably or, as second choice, 12mm nuts.

Do they exist?

Hi Geoff

They are cylinder head nuts in an awkward spot hence the need for a torque wrench adapter. The original 13mm nuts are steel I guess as they go rusty. Steel replacements would be fine.

I would prefer to go bigger than smaller.

M8 x 1.25 is standard metric. They will be readily available in a 13 mm hex 14mm will be a special.

I only just spotted my typo in the original message - now corrected disbelief

To be clear, I am trying to find a source of 14mm (preferably) or 12mm nuts to fit my M8x1.25 studs.

I bought one of these but it actually has 12mm and 14mm ends and not 12mm and 13mm as it says in the heading no

If I can fit a 12m or 14mm nut in place of the original 13mm one then I can use my otherwise wasted investment.

Brilliant - thanks Roger!

The nuts need to be torqued down on the cylinder head studs but its impossible to get a socket on them. The wrench I got only does 12mm and 14mm. Can't find a 13mm torque wrench adapter but its gonna be cheaper to change the nuts wink

 If that happened to me, I'd email the seller a pic of the wrong one and suggest they airmail the correct one pronto. Make a claim via Paypal?

I am totally cracking up disbelief

I was replacing a head and started to look for different sized nuts when I realised that the standard nuts are actually 12mm after all and my torque wrench adapter fits biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

This is where the nuts are situated on the TTR head.

Interestingly I did the two nuts up first by sense of feel as I always have done in the past and the torque wrench confirmed I was spot on wink
