*Update with progress and photos* A Night In Truro Hospital (then 3 in Plymouth) - Poor Troy.

Well still here after spending the night in the children's ward at Truro Hospital.

Troy was doing a practice day at Fraddon motopark yesterday (he was with friends as I was going to join him today for racing). On 3rd session he took a jump with a 'kicker' but he wasn't quite straight and landed from height pretty much side on. He doesn't remember much except bouncing and flipping between ground and the air. He was also out of sight from the main crew so was attended for several minutes - although did get himself off the track.

He had a very saw ankle so our friends took him to hospital - where I joined them - and after an x-ray we find he has broken his ankle bone - but it's a little bit worse than a simple fracture as the bone now doesn't seem to be in alignment - and it's a very unusual displacement. Because of this they kept him in overnight - luckily it's a children's ward so they have a parent bed for me.

Looks like today we'll see consulrant but seems likely we will get discharged so we return to Plymouth and get the whole repair dealt with locally at Derriford after a CT scan to further understand what's happened & what needs to be done

Oh the joys of MX. His riding and jumping has been getting faster and higher lately so something like this was inevitable - just a shame its not a more simple break.

troy was doing well in his first championship - currently running in second position. Better luck next year !!

Nightmare mate best wishes to Troy for a speedy recovery. That's the joys of racing I for one have been there and I'm sure most who have raced have spent a night or 3 in hospital but we still go and do it all again

Best wishes to Troy, Mark. I saw the X ray on FB.

Kids mend pretty fast, so I am sure he will be sorted in no time.

Hope he mends quick - Can't say I'm into MX now, used to like watching scambles as a lad but MX now seems to be a 'who can jump highest' contest and I guess this kinda thing is an 'occupational hazard' hmm

Sorry to hear that Mark. Sounds like his boot didn't protect him very well or did the bike hit him? I hope Derriford look after him well and he's soon mobile again.

Well things haven't been great over the last few days and it was only yesterday we got out of hospital (we both stayed there from Saturday through to Wednesday).

After we got from Truro to Plymouth, Troy had his CT scan and that's when the seriousness hit home. The foot/ankle specialist took us aside and explained in no uncertain terms this was a very serious breakage of the Talus bone and he'd never seen a break so bad in a youth before. This bone - that acts as the gear between the bottom of the leg bone and the foot bone (so does the up and down & side to side movement of the ankle) was badly smashed into 3 pieces with some fragmentation too. He stated that a usual procedure (for an adult) would be to remove the base of the fibula and enter ankle through here - but you cant do this on a child without disturbing their growth plates. He said he was unsure at the time how he was going to fix it ! He also stated that post repair there may be movement limitations and restrictions in what Troy could do (not short term - but permanently) -- a nightmare for any parent to hear this, moreso as Troy is on the move all the time (and doesn't spend his life X-box'ing etc etc).

The operation took over 2 hours and the surgeon explained he'd had to use a hammer and chisel at some points and that Troy now had 4 screws securing his ankle in place - 2 of which very temporary (3 months) as they went into Tibia and crossed his growth plates. However overall he was happy with the re-construction and the Talus bone appeared to be in good alignment. He obviously doesn't know the full extend of any ligament or cartilage damage.

Troy was obviously in a fair amount of pain post op - but was eventually released yesterday. Coming up we have

1. Large/heavy post op cast to be removed Monday week, stitches removed (both sides of ankle), and a lighter plaster of paris cast fitted. Zero weight bearing for 6 weeks.

2. Cast removed and "Air Boot" to be worn for 4-6 weeks, with limited weight bearing.

3. Air boot removed and minor operation to remove 2 of the screws

4. Much physio and re-hab to try and get ankle back to normal duties.

So we (he) has a big uphill battle ahead.  He was in a lot of pain yesterday and struggling to even move his heavy cast yesterday, but he's young, fit and strong and already today he has little pain and is manouvering around a lot easier.

The battle begins - a few photos below

Before his op (and very nervous about it)

CT scan of smashed Talus bone

Scan of repair and the 4 screws

Another Scan

Troy had also mentioned he may have been momentarily knocked out - as no-one saw the accident and it was a minute or so before he got attention. He did have a bruise on his forehead and his helmet definitely shows a face-plant

He's still keen to ride again...................time will tell.

Hi Mark, I hope you get a bit more luck with the recovery and that things go well from here on.

Nightmare mark Troy will heal faster than you think as he's young when I smashed my tibia plateau they told me I would always walk with a limp and wouldn't ride again and may struggle with my job. I had no weight bearing for 3 months I was off work for 6 months but all was well in the end.hospitals and doctors have to tell you worse case scenario. Get well soon Troy

Cheers Gary -- we have to believe that Troy will make a full recovery and we've heard many stories like yours where the doctor's pass on the worse-case scenerio (I guess to prepare you mentally) but in the end full recoveries are met. Troy's strong in mind and body and he's part of a pretty active family. So we're thinking positive but are aware its not going to be an easy one.
