Or 181-054?

202-192 may be safe too.

I'll wait until it hasn't rained for another month before I go and have a look at 201-046 or the ford between 201-032 and 201-603.....

Martin is correct - it is the correct line over the river just above the footbridge rather than the farmer's ford further upstream.

See here with the Hamster going aquatic on it biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Well last night the temp had dropped and after a hot day out on the 'roady' I decided to go out on the 'trailroady' to check out this crossing.....well it's still very wet and fast flowing so no change apart from the gate to the farmers crossing on the west side being padlocked.......generally most lanes there on rocky, very dusty and overgrown with swarms of flys that like to attack you......them bugs in the east take no prisoners be warned! 😳

Thanks for braving the flies and checking it out. So not do-able for a while longer then?

If I remember rightly, Brian, there's been a bit of weir working downstream of the ford. confuse

I think the river authority did some work to keep a head of water and make the river deeper. The work, unfortunately, ensures that a fair depth of water is maintained on the 'original' line downstream of the farmer's ford. It can be seen from a walk on the footbridge.

I feel a visit coming on just to verify it for you. wink

In the meantime, Google Maps shows what I mean.

Well, it isn't raining at the moment so ..................

Picture 1 is the official unmetalled road access from the east side via Dotton Hardwoods road

1 Unmetalled access.jpg

I didn't fancy hacking my way through there so I walked to the river.

Downstream of the footbridge is a DEEP (1 metre at least) stretch of water up to a weir.

2 Weir.JPG

Walking across the bridge, which is downstream of the ford, this is a view of the river towards the weir.

3 bridge view of weir.JPG

This is the "landing" of the RoW on the Eastern bank.

5 East landing up from bridge.JPG

And this is what the "landing" on the West looks like.

6 West landing up from bridge.JPG

The next shot is looking downstream to the East bank.

7 East down rom bridge.JPG

and this is the West bank downstream.

8 West down from bridge.jpg

The river looks VERY deep on the East landing upstream of the bridge.

9 East up from bridge Deep.jpg

In conclusion, I consider the best crossing to be via the foot bridge.

So, Brian, it's now your shout. When are you planning to attempt a fording? I'll prepare my camera, tripod and equipment in readiness. biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Great photos, now there are a number of lanes that would welcome such a user friendly visual guide. I reckon it will be business as usual after these last few days!

I agree - great pics Martyn!

My recollection is that, when Olly surprised a bunch of us by taking us over the ford a couple of years back, we entered from the Newton Popp side but dog legged upstream a bit before attempting to cross. We also crossed at an angle and gained the bank about 10 yards or so up from the bridge as the bank was near vertical by the bridge as your pics show.

I wonder if we could speak to the rivers authority and ask them to open the wier more so as to lower the river level ?

I crossed using the farmers ford on Sunday as the correct route is way to deep. Be warned though it looks fine and starts off only about foot peg deep, it then drops to about the depth of the front mudguard which causes a few problems ! Both bikes had to be drained out on the riverbank, my 4t wasn't to bad just a bit damp in the air box and none in the engine, my mates 2t however resembled a hose pipe out of the exhaust when we got it going !

I alway cross that section in an arc (towards the downstream bridge) as the straight across route looks to have a deep bit in the middle, which you seem to have found.
