wanted: beginner trials bike

I fancy having a bash at trials and am on the look out for a reasonably priced starter bike

 

anything reasonably modern (90's onward) considered. but my budget isn't too great so no fancy new minters!

 

road legal is a definite bonus biggrin

I was looking for a specific bike before but i've decided to look at a wider range of bikes.

 

Anyone got an old trials bike gathering dust they want rid of?

You could try your hand at Long Distance Trials on your trail bike.

The Moor to Sea is on the 6th July and there are still places left.


The West of England Motor club also hold a couple of easy trials per year which can be done on a trail bike, so you can try the sport out without having to splash out on a separate machine.

Great video Pete, i recognise some of those trials from our ride out the other week biggrin

 

I am definitely up for some LDT stuff on my DR, this seems exactly my kind of thing. Im realising i much prefer riding though the roughest terrain possible to going fast. Funny because i always expected to go from just trail riding to enduro events as i got better on the bike, but im leaning much more toward trials now.

I am still keen to pick up a trails bike, i have about an acre and half of woods for a garden so could make a pretty nice trials bike playground to practice on, its too small and steep to be much fun for for trail/enduro bikes though. Im hoping a trials bike will be quieter than a big 4t too and not upset my neighbours.

 

I might give that moor to sea a shot but im cutting it fine with the entry, i would need to join the club and ACU by the 28th to enter. Is there anything a prospective LDT rider needs to know or do to prepare? For example is the whole course marked or will i need to navigate?

Still plenty of time yet.

Regs and entry form tell you all you need to know and they can be found on the

West of England Motor Club site

Trials rear tyre compulsory but front optional

All competitors receive a route  card  giving step by step directions for the entire course a few days before the event by post.

Route is marked out with Blue L markers for left - White SO markers for straight on - and Red R markers for right.

Course marking is done on the day before, to help those who can't cope with directions, and the last man collects the cards.

I dont think the rear trial tyre is compulsory on this event. The regs show that the top class riders need trials front and rear. No mention of rear trials for other classes that i can see. I hope that is the case as I've entered and yet to decide whether to swap my rear knobbly !

 You may ride with a knobbly on, but if you want to feature in the results you need a trials rear tyre, front optional. The championship class entrants need a trials tyre at both ends.

 Thanks for the link JT, it does look in great shape

 

I will keep an eye on it, but im also waiting for an auction to end on another biggrin

 

I don't know anything about the older betas and can't find much info, anyone familiar with them? I will probably be putting a lot of time on it so parts might be an issue?
