Fixer or Andy Lander Stow.

Just out of interest does anyone ever hear from or know how Fixer is? I'm sure someone told me he was not very well - but can't remember who said this.

He he must still be paying to keep the TVTR forum going, although this does surprise me - and to be honest the forum is pretty much not used any more.

He had his ways, but had a good heart, and would help out where he could. Not to mention his wisdom of the lanes.

Hi People

Sorry to say that even though I've had a great time traveling through Mongolia, burning my XT600 in Kazakhstan and generally loving Green Laning etc., my brain decided to have a tumour. The operation was in April, the Radiotherapy ran on for 5 weeks and two days and I'm not allowed to drive or ride a bike until 2016!

I'm not keeping my Blog up to date so well because I'm on a Chemotherapy which is just making me do nothing!

I hope you are all having a great time and that all is going well for you.

Cheers

Andy Lander Stow

Cheers for reply Andy. Real sorry to hear this news and wish you all the best for a speedy recovery - and be great to see you out riding again sometime in the future.

I'll keep an eye on your blog from time to time.

Cheers

Mark.

That is so sad, never met him but felt I knew him from here.

I don't know how many of you have gone on to read his son's blog but it just gets worse.

If you feal you're having a bad day, compared to Andy's family, you are probably not!

Very sad indeed disbelief

I met Andy a few times and while he could polarise opinion he was passionate and knowledgeable about everything he did. A great loss.

Very sad to read of Andy's death. My condolences to his family. I only meet him once, although spoke on the phone and via email several times, he was generous with his helpful advice. His picture of the Genghis Khan statue was the inspiration  for one of my trips. RIP Andy.

An entertaining moment pictured below where Andy came around with his Ural outfit (used in his Mongolian trip Nick referred to - see here) and took Cap'n Paul for a spin - Wallace and Gromit sprang to mind wink

Sad news indeed. A real character who will be greatly missed by those who new him.

Andy took me on my first Devon trf ride, shortly after I moved back to these parts. I have many happy memories of his ride outs, we rode together alot for a couple of years, including the first and greatest 100 laner, which turned out to be 167 lanes and 200 miles in 12 hours. You always knew you were in for a big one if you went out with Andy.

A man of great generosity, many times he helped me out with bike problems, advice and encouragement. Possibly the only true altruist I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, he once said to me his aim was to improve the lot of anyone he met if he could,

Brusque, impatient, a little loud and outspoken at times, with an annoying habbit of setting off while you were still putting your gloves on.

RIP Andy.

Very sad news, the world will certainly  be a different place without Fixer. I will miss ""discussions"" with him or as known , the world according to Andy.  Have some good memories of laning with him and working on his Ural before he went east. The best memory is probably that of a Russian friend of mine from Siberia trying to teach him phrases, that would help him on his way or keep him out of trouble. Pronounciation was not his strong point, and it was entirely likely what he asked for would not be what he got.

Dimitri was absolutely horrified when Andy announced he was tea total,  he told him that he had better get a liking for vodka as its regarded as a serious insult out there to refuse a drink or half a gallon when offered.  He did take the advice and apparently did wake up several times with a taste, that he had had a Mongolians toe in his mouth all night. Not known if he took the second piece of Russian advice, of more of what caused the taste will also make it go away.

RIP Andy

Some of his own words about himself.....

Take a man born in 1952 and instill in him a high IQ (Ex-member of Mensa) and an ability to undestand all things engineering and a mastery of electrical componentry as well as giving him reasonable IT skills.
Then marry him to a beautiful and adored wife for 38 years and give him two fabulous kids who then give him 3 gorgeous grand-children.
Then throw the pinch of zest into the mixture that says that he can never rest but must always strive for the impossible/improbable and succeed where others may fail.
Told you it would be difficult didn't I?
To sum it up more succinctly I suppose....Brash, arrogant, stubborn, know-it-all, smart-arse! Who unfortunately does get things done. I don't drink alcohol, as I can't stand the taste, nor do I eat fish or eggs unless you want to see projectile vomiting. My earliest memory is spitting a piece of egg out!
I've ridden a bicycle over 880 miles in less than 5 days and I successfully completed the Pari-Brest-Paris cycle ride in 1999.
I can get by in French but get lost in all other languages.
I love motorbikes and at the moment I own a Honda Valkyrie 1520cc and a Yamaha TTR250. The Yam is used for greenlaning in Devon and Cornwall as we have over 1700 lanes to ride in the two Counties. I've led rides for large and small groups of green laners and I've organised several large groups to cycle and see the Tour de France.
I can rebuild almost any engine as long as I've got decent hand tools and my improvisation skills are good. I was a mechanic from 1970 to 1984 when I decided to hang up the spanners for a Rep's job.
I am an apprentice altruist, I like helping others!
WARNING...I don't suffer fools at all.

Another DTRF loss and I really dont know where to start.

Andy was a fascinating individual and I was fortunate to spend a fair amount of time with him both on and off the trails.

He was incredibly focused and tenacious and once he had set his mind on to something he gave it his all.

He did a huge amount of work building up our knowledge down south and around Plymouth, to enhance our riding potential in so many ways.
He also did a huge amount for Cornwall ( I still have his overlay ) and wasnt afraid to take on difficult landowners / frontagers, or the Local Authority.
He almost single-handedly saw off a serious attempt to get a lane near Ivybridge TRO'ed, by covering every meeting and bothering all those who might have supported the good Doctor who was concerned about 'security' on the UCR that passed by his barn conversion.

He did loads of run leading and was always good to ride out with as his quick wit allowed the banter to get well out of control at times.

Andys adventures in eastern europe and mongolia had me worrying constantly as his gps position would wobble around for hours like he was struggling to get out of some kind of trap ( camping apparently ) or when he went 'dark' for a day and a bit then suddenly reappeared 500 miles further east, with a dead straight line between, making me think he hed been in a plane .........
I felt like a helpless parent and was so relieved when he eventually got some internet time in Ulanbatar and explained all.
I really didnt want him to go travelling again unless he could ensure better comms.

Unfortunately due to my changing circumstances, I kinda lost contact with Andy in the last couple of years and didnt quite know how it would go if I called him after I heard about his tumor ( cos I can be a bit brutal at times and am not afraid to discuss dying )
Sadly I have left it too late. I wish it weren't so.

Rest in Peace Andy

We will miss you.

I never met Andy  but a member of my family new him very well outside of TRF circles. It was through this relationship that I conversed with him via e-mail about a suitable bike for trail riding when he first became involved. We have copied all the comments on this thread to Andys wife Brenda.

For information Andys funeral will take place at Weston Mill Crematorium in Plymouth on Friday 23rd January at 10am.

I met Andy several times, at DTRFG events (one was his own tale of travelling afar) & a few times on the lanes.

You always knew where you stood with Andy, he was good company & passionate about bikes.

I liked the bloke.

RIP Andy, my condolences to his family.

I signed up to read Andy's son's blog, thats where I found out that his wife, Andy's daughter in law is seriously ill with Luekaemia. On his blog I picked up this comment about Andy which I really want to share, . This is just a short extract and I hope his family will forgive me for re-printing it without permission but don't want to trouble him at this time. This happened just a week ago!

"Dad basically vanished for a few hours on his mobility scooter, not long enough for us to be overly worried but we were beggining to wonder where he would turn up. It turns out that he had quite the adventure and went over 12 miles on it, until it conked out and my sister had to go and pick him up. In the process he got a ticking off from the police at one point! He eventually took himself to Rogers of Plymouth where he ordered a new Hyundai i20 for my Mum, including paying up front for 5 years worth of servicing. What an awsome thing to do."

A bloody big HERE! HERE! from me.

Dad's funeral - Andrew Lander Stow

Dad will be cremated at Weston Mill Cemetry and Crematorium on Friday 23rd January at 10am. Any of Dad's family or extensive circle of friends are welcome to come along, but please do email ralstow@yahoo.com to notify me if you would like to attend and how many there will be in your party.

The ceremony will not contain any religious content as it will fully respect Dad's wishes. It will last for upto 45 minutes and afterwards there will be an open house with tea and cake at 9 Yeolland Park, Ivybridge, PL21 0YP. Guests are welcome at the house from noon until 4pm, so please don't all rush across at once.

We are not accepting flowers for Dad, but would instead love for you to make donations to St Luke's Hospice. St Luke's did a wonderful job of not only looking after Dad in his final days, but also of looking after Mum while she sat by his bedside. You can donate at the following link:
