What would you buy

Currently have two ttr 250s with a combined value of around £2K.

thinking about selling both and buying one probably newer bike for that sort of money.

So the question is what would you buy for this sort of money?

Wr 250/450 f or the wr 250 r ( 6 gears!)

But I must admit Stevo's bike takes some beating 2009 for that money, no kicker, but six gears! And if you wind it up it fliessmilesmile Not as much travel as the wr, but half the price, for not half the bike.

Will have another ride on it, but didn't get on with it before the suspension adjustment, he says it's transformed.

as I say it's just an idea......

in fairness I've never found the ttr lacking. But not really ridden anything else....

It is trail riding were talking about!
TTR is probably best of the bunch!
For trail riding, F-inj is unmendable, so needs a carb.
2T is a no no for most trail riding, all are near painful on the road.
4T most economical, no pre mix oil.
2T front pipes always take a ding when dropped, none a problem to mend, just another job.
Old KTM motor and WRF are the best for get up and go, but questionable for the lanes.
Modern 4T KTM AINT a trail engine, goes like stink, lovely to race, utterly pointless on the lanes!
XR250 with a button, TTR, Old KTM 4T (alright), CRFX (alright).
Husaberg, old Husqvarna etc are great fun, just not ideal for lanes.
RMX and KX equivalents seem good, but both fuel injected, lovely to ride, just unmendable when s**t enters the system.
WRR is a lovely trail bike, but looks expensive if you throw it down the road.
So, IMHO, which aint worth a ****, TTR or WRR for trails.
All the rest will do the job near enough.
Probably work out what you want, any MX or Enduro practice + trail riding?
Then a compromise to do both.
Above comments are my objective opinion, but I have ridden them all in the past, owned many, so are based on some experience.

It is horses for courses and what you want out of your bike

I've gone from 2T to WR-Fs (250 and 450) and back to 2T. Virtually all my riding bar the last 6 months has been trails - and all have been great and capable bikes (far more capable that the rider). I've done practice days on them (MX stuff & enduro-based) and again all have been great. A mixture of responsive engines, great suspension and reasonable lightness. So say a 2T is a no no for trail riding is utter rubbish. Biffs and Richs 300 2Ts will potter along at next to no revs and their torque will carry them up anything. If and when you open them up its a whole new game - and on full chaff you wouldnt want to be on a lane (but thats similar to most bikes). My 200 2T is just a hoot - so light n small and flickable, have to work the gears a little but its pure grin factor and you dont have to be on-it all the time to enjoy it. Loads ride the 250 2Ts which lies somewhere in the middle. No problems on the road but probably keep top speed to around 50mph.

WRR is ok if you want very low maintenance and more basic laning and loads of roadwork - because thats how it is designed. Adamski changed from R to F and cant believe how different it is with weight, response and suspension. It has improved his riding noticeably.

So when you say "What would you buy?", then my personal choices would be (and I'm only a 12st lightweight) :

2T
KTM200EXC or 250EXC

4T
KTM250EXC-f
or
WR250F

Had a TTR, a KTM 250 2t for years and now a CRF 250 - for lanes the CRF is a perfect middle ground between the other two.

It is for trail riding, with maybe a bit of Smeathorpe type thing thrown in. And LDT looks fun!

2 strokes don't float my boat really.

So no clear favourite for the next budget up then.....

For 2k I'd go for a wrf but you could sell 1 ttr and spend the money on the other ttr i.e. suspension upgrade and a bit of weight loss or more power.
How much road work do you want to do? I sometimes go up the A38, A30 & M5 on my DRZ the only others I'd consider doing this on are TTR,WRR, any KTM 600 or bigger.
