I have sky + box, but wanted to get away from monthly payments.

It used to be possible to run the Sky box with the cancelled Sky card with the free satellite thingy. Never tried it with a Sky + box though. We swapped out the Sky box for a Humax free sat box which allows us to record stuff and no monthly charges.

Unless you have good aerial reception go for the free sat offering Steve wink

Does anyone know if you cancel sky + can you still record and use the planner confuse confuse Our sky runs out the end of December. Have good reception for free view and using the one built into the telly, but no record, or pause facility cry

You cant use the record function without paying. You can pay a small charge to sky just to have record fuction without a tv package. I bought a freesat box to get around this problem.

You can get a card from sky when you cancel your subscription called a free to air card, you pay a one off fee of about £25 and you can enjoy most if not all of the free view channels, this would not enable features of the sky box like the recording capabilities.
