Inner Tubes, Pumps, Levers and the like


Being completely new to this game I have a couple of queries on what I should be carrying in the event of punctures whilst out on a trail.

I am a bit confused by what I should be buying in terms of inner tubes.

I have read I should buy heavy duty.

Then read that heavy duty aren't allowed on the road.

I have read that you can use a front tube in the rear in an emergency, or was it the other way round?

Then I see some chap selling some Tubliss things in the Flog It section which seem to be generating a lot of interest.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

 

Once I have the tubes, what do you recommend by way of a pump? CO2? Manual?

 

I have red the Benders thread and have a recommendation on cheap levers from there, but are the Motion Pro ones worth the extra?

I carry and use a mini double action pump like this ebay item 361099299558 which works well and soon pumps the tube up plus never let me down. Simple is better I think and small enough to put in the tail bag or carry

This is the kind of question forums like this love as everyone has their own prefernces but it's also right and proper that someone new should feel free to ask.

I'd always used heavy duty tubes in the belief that the extra thickness is insurance againsed the pinch punctures we get from riding at low pressures. However, I've since learned the reduced flex in them can cause the valve to rip out which is not good as it can't be patched and such rapid deflation would probably have you off anyway. Now I use standard tubes but encased in a sheath made from an old tube; heavy-duty thickness, standard duty flexibility. I have heard that HD are illegal but who's ever going to check? I know nothing of Tubliss and am glad you didn't pitch mousse into the question!

A front will fit the rear so that's what you should carry. It's not easy to stretch an 18 inch tube over a 21 inch rim smile

CO2 is quick but once it's gone it's gone. A manual pump can be used as many times as you had Weetabix for breakfast.

Cheap levers break with the slightest off so go for good ones but keep them slightly loose so they can rotate on impact.

I run normal tubes and carry a spare front and rear, also I have a small electric pump that works really well and saves on the manic wrist action of a manual pumpwinkwink

Just stand and watch it go upbiggrin tubliss or a mousse look good if you have a spare 180 squid. Normal tube is cheaper.

No specific links as I tend to buy whatever quality brand is available and never touch cheap Chinese ones. I think I presently have Metzelers in (but wouldn't be surprised to find they'd been made in China!)

More off topic Rik (or jerrybiggrin) was the smart one as he is covered up! I got bit to sh*t by the midges...... Make sure you wear protectionbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I have ultra heavy duty on the bike and carry standard ones as spares. The uhd are really bulky....

I use standard v-rubber tubes, only carry a 21" as i can use it in the front or rear.

Still plenty of steel ones available,  however with red you only need the original he he he
