After much consideration I have decided that i would like to get into the classic scrambling / MX scene. I was thinking of the mid eighties or early nineties era, which I understand is the Evo - Super Evo. I'm not terribly fast but just fancy a bit of racing on something that I can tinker with / prepare.
Any advice - what is best class to start with, any good clubs etc.

Your local clubs are Dartmouth, Devon. And Atlantic there North Dev folk
All a very friendly lot you will req a AMCA Licence £50.00 cheap if your doing five or more events
Weapon of choice well after recent embarrassment? Any this with wheels aircooled engine drum brakes and carb
There are norm four classes A big boys. b fast boys. C Think there fast but aren't that's me by the way D slower starter group
Practice followed by three races in your group don't fall off and you won't come last lol

There is a good social thing going on on the Saturday eve bbq lemonade pri to race day

Kevin, your nearest clubs would be Dorset Classic or South Coast Scramble Club. The Devon Classic Club uses tracks roughly between Honiton and Chard.

I think the Dartmouth Club would be a bit far. We meet at the Pig & Whistle on the Newton Abbot / Totnes Road on the last Thursday of the month.
As Kerry said, you would probably be better off with a twin shock (Huskys had them till 84 !). Not all classic clubs run Evo's, even less run Super Evo's.

If my trailer was man enough I would bring both Husky twin shocks as they need running in. But alas it's too much for the suspension

Interesting question Kev. I dare say you will get a different answer from each person you ask due to their personal preference, or the bike they lusted after when younger etc etc.
From a practical point of view. Go for something that is easy and cheap to get parts for. Is fairly cheap to buy, and has a good reputation for starting easy and being reliable.
Steer clear of the exotics. Ossa and most things Italian spring to mind ! The 70's and 80's CCM's are now fetching 5 figure sums.
I know I am biased, but Husky twin shocks are still a reasonable buy. Bits are plentiful especially in Devon thanks to the HVA Factory. Just choose carefully and never be afraid to ask one of the members that races twin shocks for their advice. There are quite a few of us now
