Streetlife Moaning about 'scramblers'

'Streetlife' is a facility to create local special interest groups and my allotment association set one up for us to share info on growing veg.

We soon abandoned it when we started receiving cart loads of posts from other Streetlife groups in the area which were almost universally moaning about something petty.

Such as this one having a whinge about 'scramblers': <Link>

I thought your response was a good one.

 

I loved the second post that encouraged people to waste police time without bothering to check their facts at all. I wonder if there are any pastimes which aren't moaned about by someone :/

Can someone please tell me why is young men riding scramblers motor bikes on the roads with no proper lights or indicators the other day one was waiting to turn right no light just in middle of road waiting, with cars passing on both sides because no lights you couldn't tell what he was doing there. Today driving by Paignton zoo another no proper lights I didn't even know he was going to turn right in front of me has he had no lights again why are they been let on the roads like this. Who will be at fault if a car goes into them because the driver has no clue where their going to turn, the roads are getting bad enough without this stupidity.

Jesus, so he was stopped in the middle of the road to turn right, was he having a fag or what ? of course not. So as she is a trained Traffic Officer/MOT Tester what gives her the right to comment on the construction of this motor vehicle, i was going to sign up and reply but thought better of it. Rant over.

Spend more time doing something positive is my view.

What a great thread - I do ride a (triumph) scrambler and I moan a lot so its got everything I like.......

What about bicycles as all the comments she makes apply as far as my experience goes!!!!!


I'll add some caravan comments later when I have more time

Good of Jane to put her Daily Mail down for long enough to type that load of b0llocks.  FFS GAFL (to put it politely).

I've seen some horses out recently without brake lights, indicators or registration plates so I might sign up and start my own thread.

It would be sensible to warn cyclists in Kingskerswell to watch out for silly cows that struggle to see a motorcyclist with a crash helmet & in all likelihood body armour. What chance do they have if they have the audacity to turn right on a public highway on their skinny bikes & lycra clad bodies?

Probably not as they are no longer taught.  Along with the bollocks of gears are for going brakes are for stopping, not select a low gear when going down a steephill, no the correct manner is high gear and use your brakes, and then they wonder why there are so many accidents in bad weather

They used to use the argument "brakes are cheaper to repair than gearboxes" which is obviously utter rubbish because gearboxes run in oil.  I think they use some equally spurious safety argument these days.

The gears for go, brakes for slow has never found favour with me.

Trials master Sammy Miller, who had a reputation for being a bit caustic at times, would use the phrase "bike in control" when a student let a bike run away from him. What he was really saying was "rider NOT in control". He advocated selecting a gear and 'driving' on the throttle so open it as required to go, close it as required to slow and this I still do today even on the road.

BTW there've been more posts to the 'scramblers' thread on Street(get a)life and now it's open season on bikes - never let facts get in the way of some good bigotrysmile Very funny but maybe someone from here ought to post to spice things up a bit smile

I think I understand now. This is not about motorcyclists riding around at night without lights the criticism of which I would heartily agree with as coming upon one stationary in the middle of the road would endanger both them and risk a nasty bump to any car that hit them.

No, this is something far more serious - it's about how intolerant some members of our society are, how downright petty they are, how quick they are to rush to a keyboard to vent their spleens while others console them with "there, there dear, aren't they awful" responses.

To say that a bicycle in that position is OK but a motorcycle is not just beggars belief.

So listen people...

Lights of any sort are not a requirement on a motorcycle used solely in the daytime.
Indicators are not a requirement on a motorcycle at any time of day or night.
Motorcyclists are quite as capable of giving hand signals as pedal cyclists are.
Indicators only became common on motorcycles around 1970 - prior to that hand signals were given.
At one time even car drivers gave hand signals (quite unlike the ones some give today!)
Many motorcyclists (myself included even when riding my 1130cc BMW) prefer to give hand signals as they are clearer, unambiguous and not likely to be 'left on'.
No motorcyclist (or pedal cyclist) will sit with an arm in the air when their intention has been indicated.
As Nick C pointed out, a motorcyclist needs both hands on his handlebars to operate his machine.
A motorcycle (or pedal cycle) sat in the middle of the road must obviously be turning right. Yes? Especially when, as at the Paignton Zoo turning, they're in a lane dedicated to turning right.

In addition to being a motorcyclist I also drive a car, lorry, bicycle, boat and even, on occasion, a steam railway engine and, in all modes of transport, can assure you the 'driver' is responsible for avoiding an accident. Having one then blaming the other party for not doing something they are not required to do is crass.
