Mobile phone reception rant!

I have absolutely no signal here in Exton this morning. It isn't as if we live in the middle of nowhere confuse

I have wandered around outside waving the phone in the air with no success.

We are with Tesco/O2.

Could it be weather conditions perhaps?

Hardly 21st century eh?

Hi Brian

I have a similar problem at my house. No mobile reception anywhere in the house. I had to stand outside in the road to make or receive a call. I complained to my mobile company which is EE and they supplied me with a "do hicky" that plugs into my internet I now make all my mobile calls at home via the "do hicky" I now get 5 bars everywhere in the house. As far as I am aware EE and sister companies are the only company that do this.

Cheers

O2 do a 'local cell' device that works as you describe also.

TTR have you removed and cleaned the SIM ?

Maybe a wider problem then - several signal bar strength in Dawlish, but no connectivity.

BT mobile fine thank you. EE a disaster. The do hicky uses your broadband wireless, not actually mobile service is it ?

Yep - the first suggestion from 1st Line support - have you tried switching it off and on again?   wink

I never really thought of the phone in that way but, yes, re-booted and got a signal - thanks Doug! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Its all down to Multiplexing really, there are only so many data channels and side frequencies available at each cell/mast and if you can only connect to one mast due you locality then you are not going to get any time allocated if its at full capacity or out of use (faulty).

I suggest before you choose which provider you want to use, get hold of a free to sim phone and get some pay as you go sim cards and test the signal strength in your area for the different carriers.

Also contact the phone carrier and tell them you are about to leave them and report the fault in your area, that normally gets there attention.

Ah EE Everything Everywhere should be renamed NN Nothing Nowhere,  Somedays cannot get a signal and we are 400 metres from the mast in direct line of sight. Bloody useless but I think they are all the same.

Have a tester at work I can borrow if req with does that - scans all networks and tells you signal strength. We use GSM to send remote condition monitoring back to the 'center' and need to know which network to use as some of our kit is a tad remote wink

We also use the O2 'do hicky's' in some depots where we have no 3G/Wifi (to give us 3G) in order to use the work related apps on our I devices - and they work very well.

That's interesting as BT use the EE network.
