We used to go the the UK World Trials rounds at Hawkstone and the Isle of Man and of course we followed Dougie & Jarvis around the sections.
Wherever you stood you could hear Martin bellowing instructions in his broad yorkshire accent, and offering often acerbic but always funny advice.
Would always have a chat if he had time, and I spent several very happy hours in a bar in Fort William on the Six Days listening to him recount tales from his riding days.

Very sad.

Great memories from the big man. Remember him arriving at a section at the Alan Trophy Trial and asking, "who's graveyard is this?" Rathmell took the 5, ML hit the start cards at about 200mph and within .5 second only his handlebars were showing. Much laughter.
At the Manx 2 Day somebody had left a boulder in the middle of a steep sided section and the observer looked guilty and refused to move it. It was a blatant plant. As I was cruising down the bottom of the results I told Martin to stand by cos I was going to fail the section. As I stuck myself on the rock he helped me get over it. I went up the section, the rock flew off at a funny angle down the hill. Next time I saw him he asked after my health and thanked me for my help.
