What the Dutch think makes a good 'Adventure Trailie'

I'm just back from a few days (road) riding around Scotland and there were bikes everywhere - mainly big BMW GSs and KTM Adventures.

Conversations in the evening always include the question: "what are you riding?" and this is the exchange I had with a mature and very mildly spoken Dutch biker we met in Ullapool:

Me: "What are you riding?"

Dutch biker: "A Boss Hoss"

Me: "You're not serious"

DB: "Yes, I ride a Boss Hoss"

Me: "But that's got a V8 car engine"

DB: "Yes, it's a 6 litre, 425 bhp, V8"

At this I thought he was having me on so pressed him...

Me: "Is it here?"

DB: "Yes, it's outside"

Me: "Can I see it?"

DB: "Yes"

So we went outside and there was the biggest motorcycle I've ever seen:

Despite it being midnight and after a night in the pub he was happy for us to sit on it:

It was very comfortable but my, weren't those bars wide!

He and two friends (on a tiny BMW 1200GS and miniscule Harley) had ridden the same anti-clockwise coastal route we'd taken and he assured us the Boss Hoss was very manageable even on the poorly surfaced single track roads we found. Great respect to the man for even dreaming of using it on such a trip and stopped me thinking my overladen GS was a handful on the tighter roads smile

Cheers,

John

With that much power it must be insane in a straight ! The Torque alone would be enough to make you hold on but the fuel economy must be awefull being a V8. Great bike though I wouldnt mind a go on one

Perfect bike for Netherlands, no hills, few bends and not more than a 100km between fuel stations. Ideal adventure trailie for Scotland too where you cannae ride off road without permission n the locals have a sense of humour

Thumbs up

Liked the video smile

There were a lot of Dutch bikers in Scotland this year and I often think the hills must come as a shock but they were always happy to wave and chat (unlike the Germans who were, as always, aloof).

I did ask Boss Hoss man about fuel consumption and, while he didn't give me an actual figure (it would have been litres per kilometre anyway so meaningless to me) he reckoned it had a 350 mile range. Even if he meant 350 kilometres it's still impressive but the tank on the thing was HUGE - it had an instrument panel in it containing five dials across with space to spare!

As for the acceleration... notice how both the rider and pillion have back rests.

Cheers,

John

The Boss Hoss has no gearbox, a single gear is sufficient apparently

I think some did and you'd imagine it would be all it needed but this one had a two-speed semi-auto box. He tried to explain how it worked but, as I said, it was around midnight after a night in the pub smile

Cheers,
John
