Ridden a WRF250, lowest power setting, absolutely the doggies danglies.
WRF450 would be seriously quick, 250 would be more than adequate - upto you, all are brilliant.
Ive gone for YZ250FX - cant wait.

Hey,

Think I got a good deal, just managed to get the last 2016 wr450 from fowlers in Bristol, saved £1000 on a 2017 model, got it for £6500.. Pick it up on Saturday. Not sure if there are any more 2016 models available in the UK .. I think they are doing some 2015 models for £5500 brand new. Which is bloody cheap if you want the older model....

I looked at the new yamaha at the off road show yesterday, they have come a long way in a short time , nice looking bikes and closing down the weight gap between the other brands of bikes

Its where the weight is thats important, overall weight is so close its almost irrelevant.
My YZ250FX feels just about spot on, bringing all the weight back as they have makes the bike feel so light and nimble.
IMHO I think it is a "Game changer", a la XR250 to the 1998 YZF250.
The European bikes are very good but they arent any better than the new generation Yams.
On a trail riding note, the bike can be ridden very gently with no loss of tractability, even in top gear, not bad for a full MX motor.
I am seriously impressed!

Luckily, having spent too much time x ref part numbers etc and a bit of measuring, many parts from my YZF/WRF are the same.
Brake pads, sprockets, discs, wheels (I think, got a pair, might need to change bearings to suit, but promising), brake lever, gear lever, oil filters, speedo drive, speedo head etc.
I will keep a record as I work through it, for the benefit of others - makes buying s/h bits choice a lot wider.
My ying tong flexi levers arrived today, they are beautifully made and I havent broken a pair yet, I dont run knuckle dusters so they must be half reasonable.
WRF mudguard on new generation is, "a la alloy frame situation", different to cater for battery, bits and pieces.
I think there is a possibility that a YZF might be moulded to suit and a couple of brackets to hold the various bits. Time will tell.
Why do I want to know, I always take off new factory plastics and use after market for the obvious abuse and then replace at sale time.
YZF set £60 - 70, ideally in yellow with the retro anniversary graphics.
The standard rad shrouds are like the new generation KTM, ie all the graphics are moulded into the plastics and not the old sticker set up, but they are correspondingly dearer to replace!
Old WRF front wheel and plastic bash plate will also fit 100%.
I will post more of this crap, is anyone interested?

If not, I wont bother, tee hee.

Bigger fuel could be tricky, read somewhere that IMSA do something but causes several problems because of where it is situated.
I think the radiators are basically the same, the o/s part no is different but I think that is to allow for the fan mountings, which are part of the rad.
Similarly the rad braces will be very close, if not identical.
Standard blue WRF plastics are readily available and there is now a yellow wrf set available - yippee, thats the one for me, sensible money as well.
I haven't pinned down the "Anniversary" graphics yet, but I only want the rad shrouds, so might get them knocked up.
Possibly relevant to WRF owners, if you want to use after market plastics, the rear number plate mounting and LED stop / tail light.
God knows what it is like, but I ordered mine from Ying tong, £5 delivered!
Looks the business and Ive not had a problem with other bits Ive had over the years.
As I said the spring back clutch and brake lever is beautifully made and the pair were delivered for a total of £18.
I used a pair on my previous WRF/YZF and my 250exc, none have broken despite being thrown down the track a few times.

Just got back and gave my new ride a once over, can see a few jobs that need doing, not assembled to my standards...,cables all crossing over and twisted, throttle cables need adjusting, but apart from that looks awesome and can't wait to get out in a few weeks..
Only gripe is I thought Yamaha would have gone to a trail tech/Ktm speedo magnet pick up type speedo drive... But got a electronic pick up driven off what looks like an old type cable drive... But I'm just being over critical... Is awesome machine

That sounds more like a "Fowler" issue rather than Yamahas.
It depends who puts it together and PDI etc, made enquiries re WRF from Fowlers a couple of months ago - less than impressed with their reaction, sufficent to think if I get a WR, then it wont be coming from Fowlers. Maybe I was unlucky, but when you are spending, for most of us, a large amount of money etc.
I was lucky, from my perspective, in that Ive wanted a YZ250FX since 2015, but only available in Canada and the US.
Luckily for me Andrew Marsh, Merthyr Tydvile, had imported 5, I think, got the last one, they rushed away.
My new one certainly didnt turn up like that. The speedo is the same as they've always used from 2007 on - not the prettiest but functional and stronger than most.
Latest info, back wheel from any Yam YZ or WR will direct fit, front wheel will not.
However front hub casting appears to be identical, just outside of bearing is 39mm not 37mm, so machine bearing housing by 2mm, new bearings / spacer / seals - good to go.
Im doing a spare set of wheels, powder coated rims etc so will report accordingly.
Rear brake pads are the same from 2003 todate, front pads from 2007 todate.
If you are sorting out the wiring etc and you have tank off etc, could you take some clear pictures of where the headlight and tail light are plugged in.
Im almost certain the wiring loom for the WR and FX are the same, just need to work out what goes between my loom and the end bits.
Im hoping to have a plug in headlight / horn / winkers etc on one end and a similar set up for the tailight.
Brakelight switches will remain at all times.
Exciting times.

Have you spoken to fowler's about this?
They are normally very keen to do what they can when a problem occurs?

Hey,

Nige, I will be stripping down to fit a new plastic kit etc so will just put it right.... If it was anything more than a few crossed over throttle cables I will certainly be on their case.... Have you dug out your bike will be heading out soon??

Fresh fuel in and it's running ok. Just need to order some dust seals for the wheels so I don't trash the new bearings, it's a shame that derrick lane has moved could have got some tomorrow!
Will be soon

Jerry

Have you got, what are your thoughts on the GYTR tuner

Was going to order up a quiet FMF can, just wondered if it would require re mapping to suit

FMF will provide all the settings you require, my friend has already been through this.

It was straightforward.

Tuner options are straight forward, plug in, adjust and away you go.

Ive ridden a WRF250 on its basic setting - trust me, you are unlikely to need any further up.

Ive ridden a YZF250 on its hottest setting, unless the right conditions, ie sandy / loamy, it is bloody hard work, unbelievably quick.

If you check out the standard settings for the tuner, it says it all.

In my opinion it is an amazing bike.

With a little suspension tweaking, clickers only, the same bike can ride at Enduro Championship level, MX at a good expert level and also be ridden very gentle trail bike mode.

All with no aftermarket bits.

The YZF and WRF are very close, far more so than any previous YZF/WRF, the differences are virtually settings only.

A cheaper option would be standard YZF rear pipe, straight fit.
Mine finishes 75mm inside rear side panel, the noise level is very acceptable, definitely OK for the trail.
If you nail it, it will bark a bit but nothing like the crap I see hanging off the Racers / trail riders bikes.
Aftermarket systems are a bit lighter but not extreme.

Rear wheel, any year 18" or 19" will fit, 2003 until 2017.
Front wheel changes from 37/20mm bearings to 39/22mm to include the 22mm spindle.
Im building up a couple of sets of wheels, front hub machined to take bigger spindle and powder coated.
Same applies to WRF front wheel, allows for the standard alloy frame speedo set up, even the speedo fits, albeit blue case not black.

Pictures need to show headlight connection to main wiring loom, similarly rear tail light connection around the battery area.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that info Jerry, you seem to be the goto guy for this model...

Was just worried about any long term damage rather than any power increases by running a non standard can.. Will look into a standard YZ can..

The standard WR can seems a bit pathetic, can only just get my thumb into the exit ... Not very nice sounding either

Will look for a second hand rear wheel assembly for my trial tyre

Standard WRF wheel will fit, ie 18". Trials tyre rare on 19", speedway tyre can be used but they arent road legal.
YZF can releases loads, but you will need to retune etc.
