Looking at a new lane bike

Now I don't get a new new bike often [ Last time was 1981] but her indoors has come into a little windfall an is treating me so top runners in the yes please are

Ktm Freerider 350r

Ktm freeride 250t

Montesa 4ride

Montesa 4rt road legal with long ride kit

I have a TTR 250 that I will be keeping I'm leaning towards the 4ride but yet to have a test ride on one I have been on ktm 350 freeride. an liked it. I know someone on hear had the 4ride an passed it on in a short time what happened..................

I'm from a trials background so I'm no enduro rider liking more the slow more technical lanes is there a bike that should be on my list that I'm missing out..............

IMHO, trail riding is rambling on a bike.
Now Im probably the worst "Old fart" for having the wrong gear but after having ridden most modern stuff I still come back to the TTR as best bike.
Jackies Scorpa T ride comes close, if not better, but as a "Wash it off, put it away until the next time" sort of thing the TTR does it for me.
Ask yourself the question, "Will I enjoy the lanes £4000 more", I very much doubt it.
So, go on holiday!
Tee hee.
ps I bought one last new bike, even though I knew I shouldnt, totally unsuitable, but tiz fun.

I hear a lot of good things said about the Beta X-Trainer. Front suspension may be where they've scrimped a bit to save on the RRP but if your "lane rambling" as Jerry puts it then I'm sure it will be more than capable. I know a few who have the X-Trainer and love 'um!

Jerry
I can put hand on hart and say I do ramble on a bike I can spend all day out and ride less than 20 lanes I'm that slow over the ground. an if I'm in the middle of a group on the lanes I feel rushed all the time so I favour tail end Charlie or just me and a mate out and about or the solo ride. Ten year old kids go flying past me on a mx track on a 80cc bike an lap me easy. been out on a Ktm freeride 350 today on test an liking it just the Montesa to test next week

Plus 1 for the X Trainer.

It is one of the best laning bikes around and, IMO, much better put together than the the Freeride.

The X Trainer is a softer, slightly smaller version of the RR300 but with all 'proper' components. The Freeride has brakes etc that seem to be from a kids toy.

The only issues with suspension on the X Trainer seem to come from riders who are really looking for a race bike or want to get lots of air on the jumps - it doesn't sound like you are that kind of rider

4Ride would be my choice, it's a Honda and bomb proof
I have been running 4RT's for Trials for 10 years since they came out and they are perfect
For Devon's lanes the 4Ride will be perfect
One of the lads up here in Yorkshire has had a 4Ride for a year and 3000 offroad miles and it hasn't failed once, just routine servicing
He's got a XTrainer too and that has been problematical to get the jetting right, so it runs ok

Still trying to get time to pop down to St blazey for a test ride on the 4Ride And I'm not counting out a 4rt if you get the Montesa Trials clip on long range seat with it as a full on trials bike would do me just as well.

I recommend an Xtrainer for laning. I have had one from new since April 2016, covered 4300 miles in the UK, Spain and Portugal with no problems only regular servicing. The only change from stock is that I changed the needle for smoother carburation. I get about 100 miles from a tank and the auto lube is great !

A mate has a 4Ride and is always concerned about the location of the next fuel stop. It really is a trials bike with a seat and has no electric start.

I had a 350 Freeride before the Xtrainer and was always concerned about the next fuel stop. It handled almost like a trials bike but had a tendency to stall on rocky steps. In comparison, I think the Xtrainer is better made with better componants.

I tried a 250 Freeride for a day but didn't like the carburation and from the forums apparently it's a well known problem with the model with no obvious cure.

I also had a Beta Evo 4T with a long range seat/tank which I used for trials and green laning. It went anywhere but the suspension was not really up to higher speeds and the gearing was too low for much roadwork. It was too much hassle to change it from trials mode when I went laning, apart from putting on the LR tank......

Hope that helps ......

David

i tried cee-b's x trainer and it was very good on hills. have now got rr300 and probably not good enough to tell the diff really. if not racing, pushing it, i would go for the x trainer.

So down to a quick report on the new 4ride after it's first trip onto the lanes Its no Enduro bike Its a Trials bike with a seat on it as such it will climbed anything you point it at an have the skill to getup the kick start is a little high but the bike starts so easy with a little prod first or 2nd time. The clutch is real nice and a one finger pull a 1lt bottle under the seat sorts the 70 mile tank range with room left for your tools. The only things that knocked it for me was the side stand switch [motor wont run with the stand down full stop] so pull the switch off and lack of neutral light and the gear leaver is a foot away from the foot peg but in a short time you get use to it all in all I'm Happy with the bike an it fits my riding
