Hi Guys

I want to go to the tar barrels this year, never been before. There is not a lot of information on the web site. Any local knowledge would be really useful along the lines of: where to park, where to watch from, what time is the main event, getting to and from the event (do they close all the roads?).

good luck with this Nick,

roads close at 1545 and you can only get in if your a resident with proof, i think there will be car parks on all the major rds in but be prepared for a walk in, as for location just head into the town you wont miss it....

Get there early and park up Kennaway Road on the east side of ottery, might mean a detour but saves getting caught up in all the traffic leaving on the main routes.

Do all of the smaller barrels up the side streets and get down to switch gear location early, one word of warning in the main square prepare to get crushed !!!

The first children's barrel is lit at 16:15, and the ladies and mens barrels start at 19:15 and there is a new one roughly every 15 minutes until the last one at 23:59. The barrels get bigger as the night goes on.
Amazing how far people travel to see the show.
When we went a few years ago we went into Poppadoms (an Indian restaurant) and sat with two ladies from Philadelphia University who had come over just for the tar barrels.
