It is a shame Dartmoor national park fail to correctly sign the legal routes so people do not know what is legal and what is not.

I expect they are looking for people like this who ride stuff they see that looks vaguely vehicular probably believing it to be legal

But it is people like this who give us a bad name (9.25 illegally riding in Cannonteign woods and 12.23 illegally riding in Hound tor woods around 191-075) who do not give a toss

As you say we have nothing to fear beyond having our time wasted while they check we are riding legally

Spotlight news mentioned it this evening,

Off-road vehicles on Dartmoor

We are seeing an increase in illegal off roading on Dartmoor. If you see any 4x4s or motorcycles illegally off roading on Dartmoor, please pass this information onto us. You can do this by emailing the team directly on PlymouthRCT@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk, or into the control room by dialling 101 or emailing 101@DC.police.uk

Useful information includes:
Time, Date and Location of sighting
Number of vehicles
Registration numbers
Make model and colour if known
Message sent by
Adam Bush (Police, Special Constable, Rural Engagement Officer)

THE TRF COULD USE THIS FOR PR BY OFFERING HELP

AT THE VERY LEAST IT WOULD DRAW PUBIC ATTENTION TO OUR CAUSE BY DIFFERENTIATING US FROM 'THEM'

IS THERE A VOLUNTEER WHO WOULD BE WILLING TO CONTACT ADAM BUSH?

I can't help but wonder if someone has complained about 'illegal' riding after seeing my SE Dartmoor run on one of the less well used lanes recently but we only rode legal lanes and everyone we met were all smiles.

Do we know if the map overlays are up to date so we have a better idea that were not riding where we shouldnt?

I know all of the lanes used on my last Dartmoor ride were legal when I went to Exeter County hall land charges dept because all were marked as maintainable at public expense, and none were recorded as Footpath/Bridleway/Restricted byway on the Definitive Map in Luccombe house on the other side of the car park. No Footpath or bridleway or Restricted Byway signs have since been erected and there were no No Entry or Road Closed signs or anything else to let me know any of the ways had changed in status since I researched them.

But you make a good point.

Every TRF member ought to regularly get the most up to date version of the overlay so as to be as sure as can be that any ways used are legal.

Managed to get to speak to the DNP person in charge of the operation to catch illegal MPV use on Dartmoor.

First of all be assured that they are very aware of what lanes are legal that we use and they have no problems with this at all. I have offered our help with this (if required) and asked that if there's a future report that we may be involved in as much from an educational view to help avoid any confusion over legal usage. The problems they are having are centred around the Plym Valley and are to do with groups riding on Bridleways and open moorland, hopefully they are caught soon.
