Interesting that the list of groups does not include Devon

Perhaps they recognise that the Devon groups members have a functional forum already and will have no use for this enterprise?

Maybe they don't want to send members this way Pete, as they have effectively made their forum into a blog.

Does Devon have a FB page? as that is what that link list is.

Yep, a constant scroll, so no way of actually having a conversation on a single subject and watching it develop.

So, not really a 'forum' then no

Oh dear.........   Sorry but won't be using that......

On the 18th December 2017 this Forum was archived and the TRF launched
Trail, the home of Trail Riding in the UK. This new digital tool contains a
new forum where TRF members can chat and share information, as well as a
host of helpful features. To get involved in the conversation please visit:

https://trail.trf.org.uk/

How sad that the TRF have squandered a good opportunity to provide members a means of communication, what a shame

I am astonished to find the old dysfunctional forum replaced with something even less useful, quite an achievement

I am surprised they bothered as this only seems to serve to point people toward Facebook which I am told it resembles. I failed to notice the groups list was only a link to the individual Facebook pages. Strange how they managed to miss Devon off when there is a DTRFG Facebook page

The misleading title of Byway map is incorrect judging by the inclusion of Unclassified County Roads alongside and in the same colour as the Byways but at least the Restricted Byways are distinguished by use of a different colour. It reminds me of the map published on-line by Sven which included the DTRFG lanes database published without permission, although this lacks the detail one would need to see to use it for route planning. Anyone trying to use it that way will cause problems as they blunder about trying to find a way, and in my opinion the TRF has made a bad mistake publishing this for non members to view.

Did anyone ask if it was ok to publish the Devon group's lanes database or did they assume that since Sven had already placed the information into the public domain it did not matter, and because the information is clearly not up to date I wonder if the TRF will accept any responsibility for what will happen when people assume that it is accurate?

 Indeed, thank the Lord

Its a blog style communication tool, open to view by anyone, only signed up members may post, although kind of handy it wont be encouraging any TRF business of a private nature, i guess this will have to be done through contacting the TRF officers through the email process

I'll keep looking in for a while and exploring but i'm not holding out for anything to set the world on fire, i believe there is a 'tag' option if you require to follow a post/comment

I'm not to impressed at the moment as i thought the TRF were exploring a new forum, more advanced + updated from the old forum, helping bring together (or trying to) all the TRF groups

I've watched it for the first couple of days but don't think I'll be going back.

The 'tag' option is fine to keep track of any post you want to follow, but the post won't stay visible so it won't get responses after the first few minutes when it gets buried by new posts.

How do you, for instance, try to get responses from the membership for a technical query regarding a bike problem? Or advertise sales and wants? Or have a general discussion?

The 'forum' does not seem to provide the basic necessities of a forum. Disappointing.

Sadly I agree with a lot of the comments made already.

I will keep an eye on it and see how it develops but don't think it covers events or has the capacity for a for sale and wanted section or technical bike advice anything like as well as the forum format we are used to.

to be fair they are asking for proposed comments to improve things,it appears to be a work in progress, if we propose and then the proposals are not taken up, then perhaps we may be in a position to criticise, after all thats what evolution is about and people quite rightly complain when there is a lack of response on forums for activities, perhaps we should recognise the work done positively?

I want to be able to

organise rides

nope

sell things

nope

have a discussion

nope

get advice or technical help

nope

All of the above was possible with the previous forum, albeit not nearly as easily as on here, but I have with reluctance come to recognize that all the work that has been done has had a negative impact on the functionality of the format.

On a positive note the Green Lanes Environmental Action Movement will be delighted with the new format which has deprived the TRF membership of a potentially valuable tool for organising, buying/selling, discussing, advising and permitting the membership to communicate.

What a stupid own goal!

I agree with you Peter, that a lot of work has been done and I believe that the new format will appeal to a lot of members. Anyone who likes the FB/Twitter format will be perfectly OK with it.

Unfortunately, I don't think that any amount of suggestions for 'improvements' will enable this format to support the kind of functions mentioned. It is a format that is designed to Transmit, but not to Receive. That is fine for chucking out little tidbits of of information/opinion (or for announcing policy changes etc for the most powerful country in the world ) but not for supporting any kind of discussion that is not over with pretty much instantaneously.

I can perfectly well understand why we have come to this situation. The old forum went into a phase when the tone and content of many contributions were extremely negative and personally insulting. The atmosphere was very corrosive and dispiriting and certainly did nothing to further the aims of, or improve the image of, the TRF.

I don't mean to criticise what has been done, and to hanker back to the 'old days' and try to recreate the previous forum, I just mean to point out that it is not something that works for me personally.

Perhaps the membership has driven the direction of the new forum and we have ended up with what we deserve?

Just a point for me, imagine trying to manage all those posts, no way anyone is going to police a national forum way to big.
