My neighbours a T*at

He has a 58 plate diesel Astra,

every morning without fail before he starts work  or goes out anytime time during the day,

he leaves it running up to anything like 20 mins before driving off, regardless if it is warm and sunny.

Not sure what he does when he leaves work though...

****..

If he leaves it unattended I think he is breaking the law, and anyway, if it is unattended pop round get his keys and lob them down the nearest drain.

Leave nerve agent on his steering wheel?
Jam a spud up the exhaust?
Cut a brake pipe?
If all else fails - shoot him?

I think the spud up the exhaust is probably taking things a bit too far, the other suggests seem ok though.

First speak to him and keep your language measured and calm, and record everything keeping a diary for future reference. He may turn out to be reasonable and simply not know he is causing any disturbance.

It is probably worth asking the police to take action. I do not know what English law says but Youtube has plenty of videos about the court cases brought by the USA police against people doing what your neighbour does.

The environmental health department of your local council will provide you with a diary to fill in in order to prove nuisance should court action become necessary. It is an offence to cause alarm or distress and being deprived of sleep is distressing, (and as a night shift worker I know about this first hand).

If you do not want to take direct action like removing the keys I must advise that personal experience makes me believe direct action should be taken because after trying to use the official remedies with **** all success over a long period to resolve the problems caused by a nuisance neighbour dealing heroin in the flat below me I think it is only fair to share the annoyance with your neighbour at every opportunity he provides you with.

I am currently without a next door neighbour and waiting to see who or what moves in. I drank champagne when the smack dealer over dosed and died. Her replacement was lovely but has moved to a larger place after giving birth. I will not tolerate another anti-social neighbour and will definitely take direct action immediately should it become necessary as trying to do the right thing and keeping to the moral high ground did not work for me in the past. Do not patiently wait for the authorities to take action because they will not.

Taking his keys would be theft but finding an unattended car and taking the keys to the police station would not....

I have to be honest and say that I wouldn't like to live next door to me!

Perhaps my biggest faut pax was spraying a Capri up my drive using slow drying paint. The overspray blew across into my neighbours and left a lovely red sheen on their washing disbelief

That was quite a looong time ago though. Current neighbours just have to put up with motorbike engines being test started and warmed up...

Is it just annoying you or is it really a nuisance? .... Why not just chat to him and ask him why he does it?

I do rather like it that way - having no neighbours to upset.
The A30 dual carriageway has always been an ally, bikes, excavators (make good jumps), horse s**t, metal bashing and all the other things that we love doing but the rest of humanity would love to stop.
Not only did TTR paint the neighbours everything, he also got loads of runs in the paintwork!
Talk to the man sounds like a good idea, if no response then show him our discussion and arrange a TRF meeting outside.

Modern diesels hold so much water they won't warm up a idle, never mind the oil. It's probably just prolonging the wear of warm up.I can drive a transit for 100 miles leave it to idle 30 minutes and the temperature is dropping.
But it might have a dpf defeat timer like some of the fiats ( possibly same engine) in which case it might or might not save them thousands in garage bills!

We live in the countryside ,so cant really go and chuck his keys away...
He is not the sort of person to have a chat too, been in court for harrasment of a neighbour,(fell out over a shared area for parking, even Tesco park on the main rd to deliver , so as not to cause trouble.)
The family are not sociable at all, they were shipped out from Honiton many years ago for trouble and stuck out in the countryside, (council)
5 kids(22 to 8 yrs) ,3 dads, non married and he has a son that visits now and again... All in a 3 bed semi..!!

If he is renting then take it up with his landlord the council as they have procedures to follow and a duty to do so

Keep a diary of every event then take it to his landlord

Every time

Or learn to live with it

Send them to Cranbrook, apparently Manchester and Birmingham have unloaded or about to unload many similar characters to said town.
Being realistic, unfortuntately, sounds like you are stuck with them.
Reporting them is an option, trouble is "Who made the complaint?". They might be scumbags, but Im fairly certain they will be able to work that out!
Their resistance to aggravation will be higher than yours.
Time to put it out of your mind and go for a trail ride when you think they might be getting to you!

Don't forget to warm the engine up first, for at least 20 mins

If you cant sort it by having a chat then there could be an offence if its unattended on a road.

Construction and Use Regs 1986

Leaving motor vehicles unattended

107.(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no person shall leave, or cause or permit to be left, on a road a motor vehicle which is not attended by a person licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and any parking brake with which the vehicle is required to be equipped is effectively set.

(2) The requirement specified in paragraph (1) as to the stopping of the engine shall not apply in respect of a vehicle

(a)being used for ambulance, fire brigade or police purposes; or

(b)in such a position and condition as not to be likely to endanger any person or property and engaged in an operation which requires its engine to be used to

(i)drive machinery forming part of, or mounted on, the vehicle and used for purposes other than driving the vehicle; or

(ii)maintain the electrical power of the batteries of the vehicle at a level required for driving that machinery or apparatus.

(3) In this regulation parking brake means a brake fitted to a vehicle in accordance with requirement 16 or 18 in Schedule 3.
