Just had my Sprint ST M O T done this morning, while waiting he was doing MOT on a KTM 450 and mentioned this year a new rule has come in meaning all road legal trailbikes must now have a number plate light otherwise instant fail.
My CRF 230 is booked in for MOT and has no number plate light!
You must inspect all motorcycles fitted with front and rear position lamps.
The rear registration plate must be lit. Most motorcycles will light the registration plate with a rear position lamp, but some will use a separate registration plate lamp.
Some registration plate lamps may be fitted behind the number plate.
Some mopeds might not have a registration plate lamp."
So if your rear light illuminates the number plate, it should pass without a separate number plate lamp.

If your number plate is not illuminated by your rear light (as it says in the MOT manual) then I see no reason not to just tape over all the lights and get (what is commonly, and incorrectly, known as) a 'daylight' MOT. This should result in an advisory saying ' no lights fitted at time of test'.
This will give you a restriction not to ride in the dark or in restricted visibility. Once you leave the MOT station, take off the tape and, hey presto, you have fitted some lights - the restriction is no longer applicable.
The reason I say that it 'should' result in an advisory is that, on my most recent MOT, the main beam developed an intermittent fault so I taped all the lights over. There was no advisory issued so maybe that has changed under the new MOT regs??
