Monthly meeting 11th January.....Digital mapping training

IMG_2317.JPG

Monthly meeting on Tuesday next week.

1900 meet for food in the bar.(optional)

2000 short meeting.

2030 Digital mapping training.

2130 Drawing of door prize.

Over the last few weeks I have noticed on the forum that many of us are now struggling with our tech.

This could be because of several factors...

The demise of Viewranger, forcing us to find alternatives.

Recently joined members using it for the first time.

Christmas presents updating old devices.

Hiding under a stone for the past 10 years and now wanting to join in.

While we accept that the use of a paper map is a sure way of not loosing a signal, running out of power, needing to take a teenager with us.  The fact is, digital mapping is very convenient.

IMG_2318.JPG

Unfortunatly I can't produce a guru who understands all of the various programs available to us. Plus this would make for a very protracted and boring presentation.

What has worked very well in the past, is that as many people as possible bring their well tried and tested methods with them and share their knowledge in small groups.  This way you might get some refresher training, a whole new set of skills or just the chance to ask about that really annoying thing you can't get your device to show.

IMG_2319.JPG

This will only work if people join in, so please if you are currently using a system that you are comfortable with, come and share your knowledge with the rest of us.

If you are interested in learning, bring your device with you and hopefully you will leave, enlightened.

There will also be a door prize.

hope to see a good turn out next Tuesday

Trevor

Sorry, didn't put the location.

For those who don't know,

The Dolphin

Bovey Tracey.

50 35 28.64 Degrees North

03 40 41.67 degrees West.

If you can't find it from that then you definitely need to come.

I'll have my laptop with me, The Dolphin will have the large TV available to us, so I will be able to demonstrate handling the overlays from John Leah onto Memory Map, ViewRanger app, OutdoorActive app and Alpine Quest, and I can demonstrate route planning using Memory Map.

Morning chaps

Still getting my head around around the whole route planning thing but did come across a very helpful website www.gpstraining.co.uk

They show you how to plan routes on os maps and give video tutorials and also offer software to be able to plan a route, download it as a gpx file and send it to your device.

May be worth someone who knows what they are doing taking a look and making sense of it for us people with no clue!!

Dennis

As GPStraining charge £24.99 for the webinar dealing with gpx files alone, you'll be getting a bargain input on Tuesday evening!

Trevor, what are the rules etc for masks at the meeting and (perhaps more importantly) the bar?
I take it the meeting is upstairs?
Thanks
Matt.

You wear a mask when moving around the Hotel, they don't serve at the bar so table service for that.

the room should be large enough for us to space out during the meeting then once we start to work in smaller groups I guess the same rules apply as if you were sharing a table for a meal.  The windows will be open.

My view is that you should respect the wishes of the folk around you and avoid any unnecessary risk.  Everyone should now know how best to keep safe.

If anyone is in any doubt as to wether they are fit to come, don't.

As for the car park Neil, it would be great to think we could completely fill it

Trevor

Yes it's free. I always park in that one if I haven't travelled by bike.

I have downloaded the OS App today, and was hoping to get along this evening to take part in the meeting and deal with the whole sticky post ViewRanger world (I hadnt even realised that we could create routes! Gulp!) but being able to get to the meeting is looking less and less likely at the moment (arse)
I got in touch with the good people at OS to ask about uploading the GPX files that I currently have in ViewRanger (lord knows how I got them there it was so long ago) and I cant reasonably do it from my laptop and only have iPad and iPhone for day to day use. Anyhoo the webchat chap said the best way to upload the TRF GPX files was to get them emailed to me then open the email on my device and look for share and chose OS App to share with and it will then upload.
Does this make sense to anyone, and is anyone using OS App with any success as a replacement to the much missed ViewRanger. For a start who should I ask to re send me the GPX files?
Many thanks and apologies for posting this here rather than the original thread but I thought with this evenings discussions it was probably the best place.
Cheers
Matt

I've got no experience of OS maps.

Email John Leah to get the latest overlays files emailed back to you.

Let us know how you get on.

You can load the GPX files in one go on OA, but it does not show the whole lane only a marker at one end

It can be done manually on each lane, shows a faint line.

By pressing on the + symbol on the website version of OA.

So far I have done 2500!  In 4 days

I have asked technical support they said from March it will just show a message transfer to Outdoor Active.

I have told them about TRF and many people going to have to source new navigation.

Hopefully John H and Russell will let us know how they get on installing the Alpine Quest app, maps and overlays shortly.

I'm just trying to get the hang of Memory Map again, it seems decades since the old Road Angel days!
