So far Ive just been wearing an older riding jacket, my riding jeans and an old helmet and gloves. So far Ive found everything gets ripped by brambles, and my helmet gets hit by hidden tree branches, my trousers get caked in mud, and my boots get soaked most rides.

Just bought some Alpinestars Tech7s though, and hopefully getting some Knox armoured leggings and top soon. See how that goes.

You'll find people riding in every variety of kit imaginable. Having very expensively kitted yourself out with helmet and boots (and, presumably, body armour etc) you'll be pleased to hear that not too many of us spend a stack of money on jacket and trousers if it can be helped. Your kit IS going to get trashed - that is a given.

I'd keep a look out for used kit on the various online marketplaces, there are some bargains about. Layering, rather than anything too heavyweight, is a good idea, it gets pretty damn hot in gnarly going (especially if we ever get a summer). Look for tough material that won't get shredded too easily by brambles. Melt-proof areas on the inside of the legs are handy (but not essential) for the times you get pinned under the hot exhaust of your bike. Ex-MOD waterproofs are cheap and readily available for an outer layer.

Good luck and welcome to DTRF.

Cheap/2nd hand mx gear works for me. Hand me downs/clearance is ideal as never worried about latest fashion.
Bought new boots, gloves and helmet though for peace of mind.

Recently have bought knee braces through which were quite pricey.

Depends on your budget and if you need the latest fashion year gear . I do have motocross gear when its hot however they are either last years colours or discounted lines so alot cheaper. When it raining I use cheap army goretex trousers and a cheap waterproof as they will get wrecked in no time. My gear is well worn and lasted well which was the intention when I first bought it so pleased with the result. A decent helmet, boots and armour is the best use of money I think. Loads of good gear on ebay to save the £'s from new. Boots wise I used to use Adv boots however after snapping my foot in half I moved to proper full on SIDI Motocross boots which I should have worn at the start.

Once had a guy join me for a ride in brand new KTM ADV gear from helmet to boots which was less than happy when he came off and also scratched the helmet.
