Meeting starts at 8:00pm but some of the members meet from 7:00pm in the bar and enjoy something to eat before hand - all welcome.
Weve had plenty of feedback that navigation and route planning can feel daunting, especially when youre new to it or when youve always relied on someone else to lead.
So at our next meeting were running an Introduction to Navigation session, aimed at giving members a clear starting point and helping demystify the tools we already have access to.
The Trail Riders Fellowship has a fantastic resource in the Green Road Map (GRM) but knowing how and when to use it is key.
What well be covering (time-dependent)
Well aim to cover some (but not necessarily all) of the following, focusing on fundamentals rather than advanced features:
Logging into and navigating the GRM
Using the GRM to assess lane legality, status, and technicality
Linking GRM data with Ordnance Survey / OS Maps (digital, with reference to paper where useful)
Creating a simple, legal route using OS digital maps
Checking a planned route against the GRM
Navigating using OS Maps
Exporting a route as a GPX file for use in other apps such as Komoot
How the evening will run
This will be a relaxed, interactive session, with demonstrations, discussion, and plenty of opportunity to ask questions ideal if youre starting from scratch or want to understand the process rather than just pressing buttons.
The goal isnt to turn anyone into a navigation expert overnight its to give you:
Confidence
A logical workflow
A solid base to build on
No bike needed. Bringing your phone is optional but useful.
I'll be there with my laptop and phone, and I will be able to demonstrate the Memory Map software and MemoryMap4All android app for anyone interested.
Also, extracting the overlays file from John Leahs overlays email and then loading the overlays into the Memory Map software, and how to use the overlays to plan a ride, also then sending the planned route to your MM4All phone app. Also how to extract a gpx track file, to send to John for our user evidence.
